Wooden posts for the frame are available if your good with an axe and saw. The canvas is what costs most. Try to find some used canvas material and waterproof it yourself if need be. Good luck. I luv yurts and want a small one, on a deck, back by the garden. That'd be cool.
Oh, I see your in England. Might be tougher getting posts.

Maybe find a commune that has an interest in a yurt project... join and build, you may have a roomate or have to live in another shelter until your number comes up for the next one, but you'll get the experience in building one and be helping the commune at the same time.

Build your own yurt. Start buying the materials as you can afford them, and eventually you will have all the materials you need for your very own yurt :)

Saw a video on u tube at one point (few years back), where they built emergency shelter yurts with rigid board insulation. Sides were 4x8 sheets and the top was sheets cut in half with pointed end up, and duct tape (seams). Pretty waterproof, windproof, cheap, and even movable (you could just slice through the tape and retape).

look on sites like kijiji or craigslist for free materials, or used materials, you would be surprised at what you can get for free...

or even try dumpster diving, I have found a surprising amount of great things! my favorite find was an antique oil lamp :D

I'm thinking about building a tree house for kids an visitors and a place to get away. But I dont want a permanent structure that would damage the tree. BE to heavy. Maybe a treehouse yurt would be the answer. Its lightweight and could be taken down and put back up. It would be kind of stealthy too if camouflaged right.
