My hair is at my waist...sort of curly. I want to start dreads but I want to hear the pros and cons of doing it first. Also different ways to do it, take care of it and so on...any advice?
Do you enjoy brushing your hair? If you want dreads, stop brushing. And months down the road when you have matted hair, rip it apart in to section to prevent one massive dread. That's easiest road to dreadlocks. Read this for more info http://www.hipforums.com/newforums/showthread.php?t=365451&f=209
it won't turn into a big dread as long as you rip apart the sections. you really should read the link we keep posting for you
the knots won't form that fast and most hair separates on its own. it will take 6 months to a year before your hair really resembles dreadlocks, no matter what method you choose. i say since you hair is so long it will tangle very quickly. Read the links...they will answer all your questions.
I would suggest backcombing. It makes the dreads individual before they start to lock. It's what I did, and they turned out pretty nice. It just takes a few months before they start looking like defined dreads.
I actually am not debating it I just don't know how I want to do it....I read the link but I still like hearing other peoples advice....thanks everyone. I think my hair will do best by twist n rip....can you dye dreads?
you can do everything with dreads you do with normal hair except brushing it. And it helps if you don't use regular shampoo and conditioner. Use baking soda, or Dr. Bronners, or just plain water, or whatever you fnd that doesn't your head greasy. It's hair.
I think I will do the twist and rip....I think it will work best on my hair. I'm gonna use baking soda. I think it will come out good. and I never brush it anyway so I don't think I will miss that.
Once again, the universe implodes, because I agree with Pat. I tried backcombing this time and it was pretty fucking useless. It all fell out, but because I have super spiral curly coarse hair, it started dreading naturally pretty quickly there after. Don't be afraid that one morning you'll wake up with a big old unidread and not be able to seperate them out, it doesn't happen nearly that fast.
backcombing does work for some people but like I said, the idea of making dreads with a comb seems oxymoronic to ne
I tried it this time because I wanted it to look a bit more professional quicker. Epic fail, but no biggie, since it's summer.
backcombing did not work for me at all. I already had sections because I hadn't brushed for a month. I combed each section backwards a couple times and got bored. But I never went thru the sideshow bob phase....
I don't really care how it looks.....I hope it looks super gross.lol. the only reason I'm gonna twist n rip is so I can keep it separate. It turns into one giant dread if I don't brush it for one day. It already looking pretty good. I am gonna rip it apart today. I need to wash it but I think most of it will come out. I don't want to look like puff really but side show bob will work. After I wash it and rip it I will post a pic.......
sif you wouldn't want to look like a Puff the Magic Dragon who lives by the sea https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9NpecIwfCU defiently a song about smoking
yeah, it was about smoking pot. Scooby and Shagy were smoking out too. In the early episodes smoke would roll out of the van as they got out. I think the writer for the smurf was on a lot of acid....I like puff...but i do like side show Bob better....Honestly at first my hair will probably look like sponge Bob
That's funny, I started mine by backcombing and they haven't "fallen out" at all. In fact, I'm glad that that's the route I went. Before I offer any advice, what texture is your hair?
