Animals are sensitive and their skin reacts differently to humans. I wouldn't try it.

It shouldn't be much different from dying a poodles' fur would it?

Like I said, all species react differently. You could really irritate the skin, it could even kill him or her! It might be funny to you for a while but it's just not worth the risk, is it?

I suppose if you're absolutely bent on this, you could try kool-aid. Other than a possible sugar-rush I can't see what would harm them there. But other than that I would be VERY worried about the long-term effects of any chemicals on your rats tiny system.

Rodents have much more sensitive skin than other furry pets. You can't even use the same shampoos on them as a dog or cat! And when you're dealing with a 1-2lb pet (or smaller) any "little" thing you do to them becomes a huge deal.

Can you give animals sugar? I was always warned that chocolate, for example, could kill rabbits and dogs, etc.

No, most pets shouldn't have sugar. But if you use the powder packets without added sugar I'm doubting they'd get TOO much through the skin.

I am NOT condoning dyeing a pets' fur... it just looked like the OP was willing to try this regardless of everyone's suggestions, so I was suggesting something that ought to have no lasting impact on the lil critter.

Yeah I'll try koolaid but I was hoping there would be something a little more permanent.

And it's not like I'm dunking it in acid, it's dye. That's why I'm saying I'm looking for something NATURAL so it DOESNT DIE.

Stop whining about it dying cuz it wont if it's natural dyes.

twizz, we're just worryed about the little furry guy that's why were "wining" as you put it!
if your going to be so irrisponsible, perhaps you shouldn't have animals at all,
sounds like your not a verry responsible owner in the furst place if your willing to put your animals life at risk just to make it look cooler!!
you have to be verry cairful with rats as they are verry sensitive little things but i'm sure you don't need me to tell you that.

you know, you need to think: does he/she really WANT this? who wants this?? you or the rat? i guess it's a bit of an ego thing, so please, think before you do anything. we are so brainwashed about pets.... we need to rethink the owner/slave relationship, which is the "normal" state.
see it more as a friendship, or other, and you'll see, you'll understand even more about the wishes/inner life of "your" pet....
have you read fat freddys cat? (comic) absolutly great about this cat....

I think this is a stupid idea. Natural dyes are toxic, many plants are toxic, and the mordant which is what locks the color (and alters it) is usually some metal which means a dead animal.
the cheap koolaid packets are about your only choice that is OK (not good0 for the animal....

    love animals, don't paint them.

By the way, many dyes ARE acid, or Aniline, nasty toxic chemicals.

I can love my animal and paint it too.

And besides, it loves cigarette smoke, it eats weed, and smokes weed.

I dont think dyes are gonna bother it.

I think if you used food coloring instead of dye it would be fine.

Well, dying the rats didnt go over too well. However, dying my hands went quite successfully.

My hands look like they're covered in frostbite and blood.

One of the rats kept the red dye in the tips of its fur so it looks like red frosting on it haha... They seem to not be bothered by it, they act the same...

Your animals don't deserve to have you as their owner. You would probably be a great employee in a research lab or a circus. They paint animals and make them smoke all day.

There are dyes intended for animals, but rats have more skin problems than any other animal of my acquaintance. And sugar is not as big a deal for rats since they can live on most anything.

As for chocolate, the problem is that for cats and especially dogs, it's like caffeine. A bit they can handle... it's not good for them, but it's not poisonous. But if a dog eats a one pound bar of chocolate, then you 've got problems. That much stimulant is nasty on any system, and its best to just avoid it.
