anyway, just wanted to say to the sentimental environmentalists out there that miyazaki's anime stuff is excellent. i recommend "princess mononoke, nausicaa of the valley of the winds and pom poko (so good!) spirited away is also incredibly good, but not as environmentally focused. and as a side note, do not watch "the place promsied in early days" it is terrible even though it supposedly won two awards. just waaaayyyy too slow overall. anyway, that is all if anybody else has animated recommendations... anime or not, post away, i'd love to hear them
Never heard of Pom Poko, though I will check it out soon, I think. Spirited Away is very much environmetally focused: How bout when she pulls all that junk out of the Water Spirit? Or the fact that the boy/dragon can't find his way home because it doesn't exist because humans filled it in for a housing development? I also like My Neighbor Totoro, and Howl's Moving Castle. Pretty much, if it's by Miyazaki, I'll watch it. Castle in the Sky is good as well.
Agreed. I just watched Waking Life, a sort of surreal, philosophical, animated dream sequence, but it doesn't seem to fit in any of the categories presented here.
Agreed, would like an animated section. P.S. Check out Triplets Of Belleville is you haven't already. No dialogue, but more than makes up for that in visuals and snobby french humor.
if you liked spirited away, you should check out takashi miike's The Great Yokai War. Its a lot of the same mythological characters, cept the whole thing is real life/cg
ya, he is brilliant even when making a kids movie, like this was though, it was still pretty dark for a kids movie
we most definately should have an animated movie sub forum. all the movies mentioned so far are amazing.
Hayao Miyazaki has some other films "Porco Russo", "Lupin III" and "Kiki's Delivery Sevice". There's are a lot of good anime - "Akira", "Macross", "Gunbuster" , "Steamboy", "Cowboy Bebop", etc,etc Some of the classic Disney films are very good in terms of artistic quality like "Sleeping Beauty" with the backgrounds done by renouned artist Eyvind Earl.
