I didn't know where to post this so sorry. But Today March 20, 2009 is the day I quit smoking. Smoking is horrible and if any of you feel like smoking, DON'T. I know it's going to be hard to stick to being quit, because I've tried before but I know I can do this.

Let me be the first to congratulate you, friend!!! You CAN keep your quit, just understand that it's all in your head after the first 72 hours once the nicotine has metabolised out of your body. There's tons of resources on the 'net to help you so please try your best to stay smober!

I tend to disagree since your whole body chemistry has been altered to accommodate nicotine including chemical connections in the brain. But he's right, there is help so get all you can. This is one of the most important struggles you will ever face and I salute you for having the courage and wisdom to go for it.

Actually, this is what I was referring to:

    CHANGES YOUR BODY GOES THROUGH

    WHEN YOU QUIT SMOKING

According to the American Lung Association of Washington (1999) the body goes through many stages once a person stops smoking.

Within 20 minutes of last cigarette:
    Blood pressure drops to normal
    Pulse drops to normal rate
Body temperature of hands and feet increase to normal

    Within 8 hours:
Carbon dioxide level in blood drops to normal
Oxygen level in blood increases to normal

    Within 24 hours:
    Chance of heart attack decreases

    Within 48 hours:
    Nerve endings start to regrow
Ability to smell and taste enhances

    Within 48 - 72 hours:
    Nicotine leaves the body

    Within 72 hours:
Bronchial tubes relax, making breathing easier
    Lung capacity increases

Within 2 weeks to 3 months:
    Circulation improves
    Walking becomes easier
Lung function increases up to 30%

    Within 1 to 9 months:
Coughing, sinus congestion, fatigue and shortness of breath decrease.
Cilia regrow in lungs, increasing ability to handle mucus, clean the lungs and reduce infection .
    Body's overall energy level increases

    Within 5 years:
Lung cancer death rate for average smoker (one pack a day) decreases from 137 per 100,000 people to 72 per 100,000 (after 10 years, rate drops to 12 deaths per 100,000 - or almost the rate of a non-smoker).

    Within 10 years:
    Pre-cancerous cells are replaced
Other cancers, such as those of the mouth, larynx, esophagus, bladder, kidney and
pancreas decrease (there are 30 chemicals in tobacco smoke that cause cancer)

ALL BENEFITS ARE LOST WHEN YOU SMOKE JUST 1 CIGARETTE A DAY!
According to the American Lung Association of Washington (1998).

Finally, recent research in The American Journal on Addictions conducted by Elizabeth B. Stuyt, MD(1997) indicates people who continue to smoke cigarettes while they are in treatment for other drugs relapse twice as frequently as those individuals who were required to abstain from nicotine at the same time as their other drugs. This is one of the key reasons why we require all the adolescents who we work with to abstain from nicotine as well as alcohol, marijuana and other drugs. To allow your child to continue his nicotine addiction while he abstaining from other drugs is an enabling behavior which sets your son up for a relapse.

OP, keep on keepin' on! We're ALL rooting for you...

Wooo! In the same boat! :)

Today, the 4th of April 2009, four days before I can legally buy cigarettes, is the day I quit.

    I am not smoking anymore.

I am not wasting my time, money and health on something as stupid :(

Good luck, Mpuck, give us an update :)

    No! :p

    I'm quit quitting = turning into a non-smoker. Haven't had one yet and don't really crave a ciggie :)

Every now and then, meaning every day/week/what?

Be proud of yourself, though. Most young people don't even try.

My aunty is 38 and she has throat cancer :(

Smoking just sucks. It doesn't even look cool! ;)

I mean 1-2 every other day or every three days. It's so hard but I'm gonna stick to it. I know I can do it. Now I'm gonna stop completely and not have any more. I feel very sorry for you though =[. Good Luck on staying quit.

I need to jump on the bandwagon with you guys. I have to get the motivation to actually do it. How's it been going for you two?

Consider your health to be your motivation, not just for you but for everyone around you and your family and friends. No one wishes you to harm your body, and neither should yourself. I hope everyone is doing great!

I feel like ripping someones head off tbh. I can't stand it. I smoke about 2 every other day because I couldn't quit cold turkey. I just feel like saying fuck it and smoking again. You gotta die some day.

It's really hard. The only time I was able to quit for an extended period of time was when I got pregnant with my daughter. Since then, the longest I've been able to go is a week and it sucks. But, after today, I'm going to try again. Going to try the gum or the patch if I absolutely have to. I went that week while on the patch.
