It was a very deliberate and calculated lie.

I interviewed for a second job, and when asked about how long I was looking to work for, I told them "no particular amount of time." But I've already booked a flight for September 3rd.

If I get the job - which I almost certainly will - they'll spend a month training me, then I'll give them just over two months of work before I'm off.

I haven't lied in a long time, and I feel kinda bad. On the other hand, I'll earn important money for my trip with this, I'll be less bored having more to do, and I'll be contributing to the business with essentially as much work as they'll give me, and I am a great worker.

I don't like lying, though. I really don't like lying.

Just think of it as a reverse layoff.

I think that it is pretty normal to lie sometimes.
You did the wrong thing for the good reason.

Hey it's better then not having a job for those months in between.

There are far worse things you could have lied about

I don't really see too much of a problem with your lie.

They wouldn't have hired you if you didn't.

One bad thing you might get out of this is a shit reference, which might bite you in the ass if you seek a job in a similar sector after your trip.

For that reason I get a reference letter before I ever leave my jobs and then put a copy of them in with my applications. Just make sure its on company letter head. :)

Well, I don't think they'll give him a good reference after 2 months of real work.

This would be an additional job.. I already have my bread & butter covered.

I know, it's not too bad. They definitely would not hire me if I told'em I'm leaving in three months. Though I'm not too worried about a reference, especially seeing as how it's illegal to give a bad reference here.

But I'm already having to think of a new lie for when I want to quit, not to mention having to keep quiet about my plans while working there. This whole tangled web of deceit is why I gave up lying in the first place.

So yeah, I know it's not a big deal, and it's quite a big company, so it's not like it's gonna harm them, it's just that I resent lies, and I've gone for so long without them..

Ah well. If I get this job, it's going to be a significant boost to my funds. I can live with a bit of deceit if it buys me an extra six months in paradise.

I lost my job and went to jail and 2 days after getting out of jail I got a new job. I have court coming up soon and will probably do jail time but I havent really explained to my job about this. But why would I tell them im about to go to jail and not have a job when I could make some money in the mean time? I dont think its that hard for you to come up with some bs lie again either just say 3 weeks before yah so I found out I have to go to blah blah blah because of this and that shouldnt be hard at all

I know what you mean. I have told the same lie, as I'm looking for a summer-only job, but have not indicated on app's or to interviewers that it's strictly temporary, which it is. Otherwise I wouldnt have a chance of get hired. That's just playin the game. I was laid off from my last good job, so in this shit economy I say that (almost) anything goes to make ends meet (which is not your case, i know, but it's mine. and still, i dont disagree with what you did). I was feeling bad for doing the same thing, but then people reminded me that others do it all the time - quitting their job after a day, a week, a month, for no good reason. So if you're going to do the job well, and need to leave for whatever reason, you'll tell them when the time comes and i do agree, it's reverse layoff. shit happens!

Illegal to give a bad reference? Damn liberals :D

All in all, I would simply say... don't get too moral over stuff like this. Most other people, when placed in your shoes, would do it in an instant. The job market is such and the business world ain't nice and playful. They would just as easily fire you over something insignificant (cutting costs) without feeling too bad about it. Lying ain't good, but at times, it just helps you get by. This lie doesn't really hurt anyone too much.

...all in all, everybody lies, and whoever says that they don't is a liar. There really is no need to get hung up on lying as some sort of sin, even if it does make you feel bad when you do lie.

But yeah, fuck it... you can still be honest with them when you leave. Just tell them that you're going, fuck it, don't make any excuses.
