I sent Obama an email a few weeks ago, questioning his decision to allow Shell Oil to drill off shore in the arctic. Here is his response....I still think is it's a recipe for disaster..... Thank you for writing. The Arctic is a unique and fragile environment where the ocean sustains both people and wildlife, and I have acted to protect some of its most important areas. I have made Alaska’s Bristol Bay off-limits to drilling, along with 10 million acres in the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas, and I have called for even greater protection for the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Additionally, my Administration is taking unprecedented steps to address climate change by accelerating our transition to cleaner energy sources and cutting carbon dioxide emissions. We are also working with other nations to advance cleaner energy technologies, enhance energy efficiency, promote best practices for reducing global greenhouse gas emissions, and aid developing countries in increasing their own resilience to climate change. Still, we must recognize that we cannot complete this transition overnight, which means we will continue to rely partly on fossil fuels. I understand the risks of offshore drilling, and that is why my Administration has overhauled Federal oversight and raised the bar on safety across the board—including by setting even higher standards for Shell in the Arctic. The Department of the Interior did not grant conditional approval of Shell’s exploration plan until having a high level of confidence that they would meet all applicable requirements. Shell still needs to secure additional approvals in advance of taking action, and if they move forward, the Administration will monitor their activities carefully to ensure full compliance with a strict set of environmental and safety regulations. Again, thank you for writing. It’s up to all of us to protect our planet, and I’m confident that together we can meet the environmental challenges of our time. Sincerely, Barack Obama
"I still think is it's a recipe for disaster..." so do I....so do I....and this infuriates me.......stay out of the arctic with your oil drilling.....! I am disappointed in Obama's response to you.....very disappointed.....
damn! Damn! Damn! Damn! is everyone controlled by oil companies? What a fucked up world.....to be blunt.....no one has any balls to stand up to these monolith companies.
I'm worried about the natives in Alaska, who have been living off the land for hundreds of years. The ice near their village is melting at an accelerated rate, making it harder to maintain their way of life. THAT'S what we should be working on is preserving natural ecology gyad dammit. And/or alternative renewable fuel sources. Which is a long term 'all 'round' fix rather than potentially creating more problems by drilling into the earth and then possible oil spills in the future. Fucking stupid politicians.
Of course, that is what we should be doing, T.....Are there any politicians who don't have fucking up this world some more on their agenda on the horizon at all? I do not see any.....and think it will only get worse.... what can we do....? We have to do something! Kudos to you OP, for writing to him at all.
probably an automated message answered by a computer the pres gets million emails a day all answered by the same bot cheers ob
The Inuit now use speed boats, snowmobiles, trucks, ATV’s, motorized canoes, rifles, canvas, polyester, and other dry goods.
and I am more concerned with the polar bear, penguin, whale..........etc.....arctic wildlife...man always moves every time he ruins a place.....there are getting too few places left for him to ruin.
yep all made possible by the discovery of oil refining and processing and their chiefs (and members) will gladly vote to sign over oil and land rights for the right price..and a few temporary jobs (and bribes)
....and the State of Alaska gives every resident $2,000.00 a year in oil royalties....kinda like giving the Navajo small pox blankets to keep warm with on the trail of tears, on the way to the Oklahoma concentration camps
Six months of total darkness, three months of no night. It's call "Northern Exposure". The heating bill is about $2,000 a month.
