does smoking everyday do anything to your vocal chords?
:( because ive been smoking for about 2 weeks and i woke up this morning and i decided to sing a song and i sound horrible and my throat hurts
i mighttt just have a cold because it is freezing outside, but i still go out there

i just sneezed so that might be part of it
but anyways yea what does smoking do to your voice?

Because inhaling carcinogens is only bad if it's tobacco?

All four years of high school I was in an excellent chorus program at my school. I did not smoke much freshman or sophomore year but junior I smoked nearly daily. Daily smoking did make singing a little more difficult but no where near what tobacco does to your voice. I was never really interested in pursuing anything in vocal music so smoking weed was no big deal but I know some people who were very serious about their voice that would not inhale any kind of smoke.

if its just weed through a bong or pipe then it wont be as bad as smoking tobacco or joints since less smoke is passing through your lungs instead of inhaling joints or cigs...but wither way its going to do some harm but not enough to notice after two weeks id say. If you were smoking daily for two years it probably would

Since when does everyone smoke a pack a day?

I do know someone that smokes enough for probably 20 small joints a day. They also smoke cigarettes so I can't comment.

I've seen and witnessed the effect cigarettes have on your voice. I know people that smoke well over a pack a day and cough their lungs out every time they hit a bong.

I know people who smoke weed several times a day and while they do become short of breath, etc. they also damage their voice. One of the kids in my choir sang the highest tenor parts when we would have a combined 8 or 12 part split. After smoking weed for some time he struggled to carry notes and lost a lot of his high range.

i dont smoke tobacco, i use leaf in joints when i roll...just bongs really and the occasional pipe, vape or waterfall and iv noticed a difference in my voice but thats after a year of more or less daily smoking give or take a few days. Still havnt inhaled half as much smoke as someone who smokes cigs though :p

yeah but your talking about bands that mostly use coarse vocals so smoking would if anything aid them but for a woman it wouldnt sound that nice...although i dont think its going to make much of a difference unless your constantly excessively smoking

I'm a fairly serious amateur singer, and I've been smoking nearly everyday for the past month, with fairly frequent use before that. I've seen some degradation in my voice, but much less than when I get a cold. My range hasn't decreased at all (helps that I'm a bass), and the only differences that I can notice are that my lung capacity is down somewhat and I can't produce quite as much volume as I could previously. Smoking weed isn't great for your voice, but it's not going to stop you from singing, especially if you're not trying to pursue music professionally.

    .......:cheers2:

Validated every part of my argument. I don't think a lot of these kids understand the small things that go into singing to make so strenuous. My choir often sang flat on rainy days and it is proven that your voice won't be at its best until you have been awake and conversing for at least 3-4 hours.
