i am a girl, 28 years old. i'm about 30 lbs overweight. i try to watch what i eat, but i work at a restaurant, so i usually eat something unhealthy there (they don't really have anything healthy!). and i smoke pot, usually at night, after work, then get the munchies.....PLUS, i love food. ;)

i'm also pretty out of shape. i want to "fix myself up" a bit, lose the 30 lbs, etc., but i hate going to the gym. i find it soooo tedious. i'm not too lazy, like i don't mind walking to GET somewhere, or something....gimme a canoe, and i can paddle, but mindless reps, i just can't do. i've wasted so much money on unused gym memberships!

btw, my biggest fatty spot is my belly. i've been doing some crunches, but i don't see any progress.

any suggestions for me? i'll try anything once.
    thanks.
    peace.

Well, for one your diet plays a big role. However, vary your exercise--make it interesting and make sure it's something that you like to do...or you'll never do it. Like you said, go canoeing! Go for a run. Or just start out with small steps...stand instead of sit, take the stairs instead of the elevator, walk instead of ride in the car! Not all exercise means going to the Gym! Good luck!

keep doing the crunches but don't expect to see anything unless you do some cardio... Cardio is the best way to burn fat.. maybe you'd like to find a workout buddy to go on jogs with you or bike rides in your town.... you're also welcome to find a buddy on the net to share your trials and successes..... best of luck...
Also be aware...changing your diet without changing your exercize level might help some but it wont do the whole job...just like working out without changing your diet is almost a lost cause. diet and exercize go together sis!!!
FYI: I've found that eating 5-6 times a day, smallish meals keeps me feeling good while still losing weight and getting all the food i need.
    hope I helped!
    Tracy
btw, I'm 10-20 lbs over weight, I have a buddy but I wouldn't mind another... support is always good..

Your abs are the hardest part of your body to lose excess pounds and keep tone. You literally have to do some stomach exercises everyday.

As far as getting a good workout routine. The first two weeks will be the toughest, but if you can make it past that you will feel as if you NEED to workout on a daily basis. It's the healthiest addiction ever. Usually eating right will follow suit.

geez louise, do i have the solution for you!
    CAPOEIRA!
please just check it out...it's amazing for lazy people! it's a dance/martial art/musical/'pothead friendly' sport.
    lots of cool people...
    it's fuN!!!
that's the thing about exercise...if it's not fun and useful, why do it?
capoeira works all kinds of muscles. our instructor does not allow us to do sit ups because capoeira works your stomach muscles better all on its own than any crunches will do. i tell you, i never thought i'd see my stomach muscles, being a curvy girl, but i do. i'm not trying to sound like an infomercial, it's just that truly capoeira will be great for you.
i don't know about long island, but i know there are tons of classes in nyc.
email me if you'd like info.

do something you like, or at least don't hate.
maybe skip the nite-nite smokeout for a while...maybe a few hours before sleep so that you have time to burn the food a bit.
and you'll need to try things more than once.
oh, hula hoops help the middle.
kayte, tell us more about capoeira.

    be glad to, mama!
well, capoeira is an afro-brasilian martial art created by slaves as a way to stay healthy, fit, agile, and combat-saavy without their masters knowing. they disguised capoeira as a musical, dancing celebration, complete with a precussion group (which has a brasilian gourd instrument - bierenbau - leading it, plus 'atabace' -i'm bad at spelling in portuguese - which is a large conga like hand drum, pandiero - tambourine, claves, cow bells, and other fun instrument.)
so, participants stand in a circle - musical ensemble (usually 5-10 people) at the head of the circle, bierenbau in the center. the beat of the music is basically boom bah boom. then the circle of people clap to this beat 1 - 2 - 3, pause, and so on.
two 'fighter/dancers' squat in front of the bierenbau inside the circle. the head bierenbau player (one of the highest ranking players) begins a song. as the circle claps, they sing in a beautiful harmony the chorus of the song. songs and pace of beat dictate the type of game to be played - sometimes the beat will be slow and the words of the song reference playing a catty, canniving game. sometimes the beat is fast but the song will be about takedowns and fake passes.
players swing their legs and arms in rhythm to the music and move however their bodily fluidly allows them to do so. some move almost like they're dancing at a phish show or somethin - bodies all over the place. others are compact and strong. i'm a spaz! hah...
in the flow of the music, players do kicks into defensive moves, into dodges, into acrobats, into ballet, into break dancing...actually, capoeira and break dancing have a lot in common. this art is so free, personal, and non pressured...it's not 'traditional' in the sense of that everything MUST be as the instructer has said...in capoeira one has the freedom to experiment with self expression.
when the players seem tired, or when one player clearly is on a higher level, another person will cut in on a player. almost tag team style. the 'roda' pronounced 'hodda' continues like this for hours, and you can play whenever you feel like it just by tagging someone out. the instruments and singing also rotate.
hmm...well, since there's dancing, singing, instrument playing, acrobats, yoga and meditation, muscle strengthening moves, agility, and spice all involved in capoeira, it's truly the IDEAL fitness.
i am not an athletic person. i'm 5 feet tall and barely weigh triple digits. i've got a womens body with really curvy hips. capoeira is how i keep myself strong, flexible, happy, and simple. when i'm feeling grumpy, i come to capoeira to sweat it out. i feel better when i discover a new muscle showing on my arm. when i feel sick, i come to capoeira and sing it out of me; perhaps then i won't play, i'll just take on the instruments and lead some songs, and clap and cheer on my friends.
capoeira has truly changed my life.
i can find out info for anyone from anywhere - we have a HUGE network!
    feel free to contact me.

yeah, sure mama! i LOVE spreading the gospel of capoeira! like i always say, if everyone (or most people) were studying and playing capoeira, there'd be peace on earth, no mcdonald's, and lots of hot bodies!
i'm SURE there's capoeira happenin in colorado; i find that, anywhere there's a college, you can find some capoeira. how far are you now from boulder?

Do you have a reason for wanting to lose any weight? I mean it is very helpful when you set a goal. For example a lot of gals have a goal of an upcoming wedding or something, or others lose weight to be able to keep up with their kids or to run a marathon or something. Just thinking maybe setting a goal could help motivate you. As others have said a buddy really does help, or making an appointment with a trainer (but if you hate the gym then that might not work for you) Or join a team that way someone is counting on you to be there.

Other than that, it sounds like you don't have much of a problem with sticking to a diet, you just need some organization. I advocate weight watchers. People think it is silly, or for old women but I know women who have lost over 100lbs a piece on it. I myself lost 30lbs on it, and I still do it. It doesn't restrict you, you can eat anything you want, you just have to stay within a healthy points range (which is calculated by fiber, fat and calories). Maybe mull it over. :) Good Luck!
