I have had internet with them for years, and I was talking with a sales rep a few months ago that tld me she could save me money on the bill by giving me the rate of $14.95 a month for a year. So I agreed, and then I got a bill for $50.00, which made me decide that i WANTED TO CANCEL THE WHOLE THING. And the rep had also told me that there was no contract and that it could be cancelled at any time. Today I called to cancel it, and they told me that they could but they would not credit the amount of the bill (which I never actually used due to the bill being so high.) and that I should be lucky that I WASN'T charged the 14.95 fee because if I was I would be charged a termination fee. Then she told me that the bill is suposed to be around 50 the first three months before finally going down, which the rep I talked to in the past never told me.

What do you guys think, what would you do in my case?

I’d catch the first flight to India and punch that sales rep in the mouth; say a few prayers at the temple of cobras at delhi; then fly back to the states :2thumbsup:

Not sure what I'd do but it sounds a tad like predatory business practice... in other words, business as usual. I endorse the flight to India idea- except that fists would be added to the list of things not permitted on flights in order to fool everyone into thinking flying is safer.

    Oh the hue manner tea...

Nothing you can do without proof. We've started recording our phone calls with places that bill us since we had the electric company tell us we only owed them $37 and then got our electricity shut off a week later because we still owed them more money and couldn't prove that anyone had said anything of the sort. All you need is a phone with the speakerphone function, a computer microphone, and the free program Audacity. When you speak to these people, put them on speakerphone and press record on Audacity. Make a folder to keep this shit in, if you have any removable storage like an external harddrive or a flash drive, back it up on there in case you can't access your own computer. We're in a world where liars reign supreme and the only way you can fight it is to record them and have proof. You're probably boned this time around, but now you know how to prevent it from happening again.

Not sure where that $50 for three months came from.

From what I understand about AT&T internet, the normal price for DSL non-contract is $30 per month. The one-year contract rate is $14.95 per month. If the contract is ended early, they charge a $150 fine.

Sometimes when a special rate such as $14.95 is started, it shows up the first month as the regular rate of $30 but then $15 of it gets credited in the next billing cycle. So, you're only getting charged 14.95 per month.

You could threaten to end your service with them altogether if you're not satisfied and see if they change their mind about not refunding you.

There is also a disconnect between AT&T and their oversees sales people. The overseas people are known to offer customers a service such as DSL for a really low price when in fact the customer gets something else that is worth less, such as an extra call waiting feature. Hard to tell if that is intentional misrepresentation or if the overseas sales people are just confused or poorly trained.

Also, they usually won't charge the early termination fee if you cancel the new service within 30 days.

File a report on the Better Business Bureau's website. they take care of business.

Sprint told me my contract was up so I cancelled and they billed me a 400 dollar early termination fee plus whatever my last bill was. I spent hours on the phone with them (they have the worst customer service ever) and couldnt get anything accomplished so i filed a report with the BBB. Sprint ended up sending me a check for $6 haha.

Wachovia was rearranging my debit purchases so that certain debits were appearing before checks were deposited, even though the checks were deposited beforehand, thus causing unwarranted overdrafts. Those fuckers won't ever do anything for you at their 1800 number so once again, I filed a report with the BBB. I got a personal letter written from the CEO of the southeast division of Wachovia apologizing and crediting my account.

seriously, the BBB will take care of it for you.

BBB will contact the business when a complain is filed by a consumer. If the business doesn't respond to the complaint, a negative rating is applied to the business. I've come across some stupid businesses that didn't bother responding, and they had F ratings.

An attitude has developed with some businesses of 'hey, if you don't like it go someplace else'. It's a cocky shallow-minded approach to take with customers. One of the businesses I mentioned above that had the 'F' rating in the BBB went out of business recently.
