Yeah, I had to read an early '70s interview with Kubrick to understand the ending, as well as a lot of symbolism. And yes, Kubrick is definitely a movie-making GOD; he's my favorite director. Someone is supposed to be sending me Burgess' A Clockwork Orange. I've seen the film a handful of times, but now I want to read the novel.
It's a great book, however I don't like the twenty-first chapter. It changes the whole meaning of the story. Burgess was pretty ripped when Kubrick omitted it in the film. I agree (for once) with the director, it's better without. Oh well.
Well it's hard to disagree with Kubrick! However, I do wish he had portrayed Lolita more accurately. But of course, it was hard enough to get that film released without having a 12 year-old playing Lolita. He did say in an interview, I think, that if he could re-make Lolita, he would have made it the way he wanted to... which I'm thinking means closer to the novel (which is still very controversial).
Oh yes. Another good novel too. I was actually sympathetic to Humbert Humbert. Nabokov was also da man.
