I find those echecks a waste. Almost every last car on the road that passes me pours out black smoke, smells like crap etc.
People here have found loop holes around it. They pay $35, then are given 6 months to a year to get it fixed...Then when it comes times to get it re-done, they take it else where and do it all over again.

That's why I'm happy with my bike.

This kind of hypocrisy drives me crazy. 'im gonna be as ethical and earth caring as i can but i'm still gonna drive an emission machine cos i'm too lazy to walk'

sorry if that offends but it's true. People don't NEED cars to get around but they're so damn convenient that the necessity to drive around just goes without saying even if you are an ethical person. Driving a car is much worse for the earth than anything you prevent through all your recycling methods etc!!

I know it may be hypocritical, but when your on a very busy schedule and have 10 minutes to get to place to place when it would take an hour to walk and 30 minutes to ride a bike. and in the winter in ohio, its bitter cold with 3 feet of snow, walking and bike riding just arent options. Im doing the best I can to make this car pollute less, and i ride my bike when i can for the exercise. i do feel bad, but there isnt much i can do.

You have to do what you can. If you can't repair your vehicle right nw, it's your choice. I thnk those smog stations and checks have made many people rich, and it's not the working poor that have to get back and forth to work.

ah, i see. I guess I should have considered that your living situation is different and stuff, like i walk everywhere and but i guess that's cos my work and college etc are all within an hour's walking distance so it's easier to live without a car. plus we hardly get any snow here! wish we did. I shouldn't have been so quick to judge your situation. :)

Alice, much of Europe is more human (and human powered) scale.
    the US is Sprawl.

but I know that if people do door to door tests, a bike is often a few minutes longer, but with less hassle.
you should try a bike test, door to door, any route (often residential streets or trails can allow you to zip along faster than a car that has to stop at all lights) and include the search for parking.
you might be pleasantly surprised, and you will get killer legs to show off.

it looks like your public transit sucks:

well, even in the UK, one of the most populated countries in europe, i still couldn't survive without a motorised vehicle...

there are NO busses suitable for my commute (22 miles each way)

there are no trains that run there, or to any of my friends houses, i can visit my friends in london by train, ONLY if they are inthe center (they live 10 miles from the nearest tube station..)

as a true petrol head, i am both a fan of the car and motorcycle, not just as transport, but also for fun.

i use the motorcycle wherever possible, it returns nearly 70mpg, and even without speeding is far quicker than a car anywhere, due to the ability to filter past traffic, not only is this quicker for me, but the shorter hourney time means less time with the engine running, and therefore less pollution

for urban transport, NOTHING comes close to a bike, some of the smaller 4 stroke 125 models (sadly now mostly produced in china - the worlds worst polluter) can return well over 120 mpg, so cannot be considerd polluters in any way, public transport cannot come close to this level of economy.

Congestion is also helped too, every time i'm on m bike, its one less car in the traffic, i love my car, but for urban use, unless its icy or really pouring with rain, the bike wins, its just common sense. so from an enviromental point of view, one question remains...

WHY ARE WE NOT PROMOTING MOTORCYCLES?

Everytime you are on a bike YOU ARE TRAFFIC. We have to be (I ride a recumbent trike on roadways) or we get hit a lot.

Motorcycles and scooters, if the exhaust is in working order, are a good ideas for waening off always having to use a car.
THe gas engine, no matter WHAT the size still makes CO2. your ratio may be better, and I am all for that, but it is not the answer in full.

thats simply not true... there is no train bus or tram that goes from my home to my work at anything close to the right time the first bus is 2 hours after i start.. its too far to cycle (25 miles each way) so i NEED to use either my car or motorcycle..

in all but the worst weather the motorcycle wins, its much more fuel eficcient (65 - 70mpg) fun and clean. the car is used when using the motorcycle is unsafe... happily for me, clean transport and my prefered transport are one and the same..

saying no one needs cars is a very blinkerd viewpoint..

breathing harder while riding your bike is still Co2 as well...

we cant eradicate C02 emissions, its simply impossible... we can minimise them though, i dont drive in cities, its pointless, in london the tube wins, in most other ones, the motorcycle is king.. the advantage a bike has is you aren't forced to queue with the cars, you can (safely and slowly, not like some loons) filter to the head of the queue, and thus not contribute any more to traffic conjestion than a bicycle..

I think that the best thing to do is do the best you can. There are other sides of the coin too. Like the fact that a lot of folks whose cars don't pass any more will trade the old "pollution machine" in on a new car, or worse yet one of those 4by4 gas guzzlers, thus continuing to support the polluting capitalist car industry, which is the WORST polluter of all...

You know, they offer all these THINGS to us, and then when we oblige by working real hard so we can afford to HAVE the things they're offering, they tell us we are being polluters or not environmentally friendly enough, and it's our fault that the _______________is_________________ (fill in blank), so that we must buy DIFFERENT stuff in order not to have a guilty conscience.......
