I'll name dogs cuz they actually respond to them but cats don't for the most part.

Cats respond to "kitty" or anything with the "E" or anything within a certain tone of voice. They don't need names and I just can't bring myself to do it.

I love cats though. Don't get me wrong. I totally prefer them to dogs. I love them, I just don't name them.

I agree, you should. My cats know their names, I promise! and neither of my cats' names end with an E sound...

I've failed at naming every cat I've owned....except one (my current baby, Beaker)
two of them were "kitty", which suited them quite fine:)
and one of them was called various names such as Mr. fluffy buns, pumpkin butt, babys, snooky, and love button. (please don't make fun:&..hehe)

Hmmm you may have a point there, but even so there's no way any animal could live with me and escape without a name. I'm a total name nerd, the rabbits even have middle names :)

How can you get away with not calling them something? even if only for adminstrative purposes at the vets.
I'm pretty sure cats do know their names, they just aren't the most enthusiastically responsive of creatures.

my cats know their names. all you have to do is a give them a one or two syllable name, because it's easier for them to get used to.

Yeah, all my cats know (have known) their name. My current baby even knows that every other day he gets a saucer of milk that I call "milkys" - because for some reason everything I say to him ends in that familiar E sound....(sprout aint the only one:p) - so when I say MILKYS he comes running into the kitchen....and would you believe that if I fail to remember on one of his days he actually cries at the fridge untill he gets his fix.........I'm definatley not getting him cat nip anytime soon, you can bet on that;)

We did a little experiment on the cats we have around here which is how we came to our concusion.

We would call for "kitty" and someone was saying they would come to whatever as long as you held out your hand or something. This turned out to be false, in our case at least. We would hold out our hand and call "here bob" "here bitch" "here ass" with no response but when we called out "here itty" "here bitty" and even "here shitty" they came running each time. We also noticed that when speaking to them a long as we used the same tone of voice that we used to call them they would look at us and be more responsive.

For just a moment we felt that we deserved to be recognised for our discovery in animal behavioral science......

but then we realised we were stupid and decided to go on our way.

you should learn how to speak cat, then you dont have to name your kitty's. they'll let you know what they want to be called. :D

Ah wow that's such a cool name.

On the off chance I'd adopt a cat then I'd call it...
Joaquin (in joke, I know [of] a Joaquin nicknamed Kitten)
    or
Bast (after the goddess of cats)

Incidentally the only cat I know that came to call with named Biggles.

I agree that if you use something really close to their name they probably won't know the difference, but they recognise a certain sound pattern easily enough. One of mine is called Silvie ('cause she's such a beautiful silver tabby :)), and I often call her 'Silly' ('cause she is, too ;)). She responds to both, possibly because I use both so often, or possibly because she doesn't hear the difference; however it's still a name (plus nickname). I disagree this is a reason not to name cats at all. It would, however, be a good thing not to give two very similar names to two cats, in the same household. Calling two brothers from the same litter 'Mick' and 'Nick', while it might seem cute, most likely would mean they won't know the difference...

My cat now who is only 2 months and all of my previous cats have responded to their names. My friend's cats also respond to their names. All cats deserve a name.

I got to name one of my cats when I was 3, and in the infinite wisdom of three year old girls, called her Pink. My other cat's called Tansy and they both know their names, and if I say to Pink "where's the mouse?" she goes mad and runs round scrabbling at the walls Oo strange things, these cats, but thats why I love em!
