"Yesterday the European Space Agency landed the philae spacecraft on a comet, a powerful step forward for humanity and science alike. However, slightly before the big moment, coverage of the event reminded us how much progress remains to be accomplished back on Earth. A number of the scientists involved on this incredible project were interviewed in the hours leading to contact by the Nature Newsteam.

One of those Rosetta scientists was Matt Taylor, who chose to dress, for this special occasion, in a bowling shirt covered in scantly clad caricatures of sexy women in provocative poses.

"This is going to be a very long day but a very exciting day," said Taylor. "I think everyone should enjoy it because we're making history."

    Rest of article here:

Thankfully he decided to apologize for his transgression against women. Hopefully his choice of t-shirt will not discourage more women from entering science and technology disciplines, as there's already a tremendously egregious gender disparity in those fields.

^Notice how there's only one woman being interviewed here.

Considering all the problems in the world today, you consider this an important issue? It's a shirt.

Many major reputable news sources picked up on this story. It's not just me who's offended.

    http://edition.cnn.com/2014/11/13/living/matt-taylor-shirt-philae-rosetta-project/

'Smith wrote that the shirt was sexist and that "The people who were upset by it weren't just those silly oversensitive feminists who can't take a joke. Scientists from all perspectives were unimpressed with the shirt, both on professional grounds and gendered ones. "'

'"The fact that a scientist of any gender, but especially a man, would think it's a good idea to wear a shirt covered in naked women while representing a major space agency and a significant research project is appalling; and clearly, he had no idea that he was engaging in exactly the kind of casual sexism that drives women away from STEM," S.E. Smith wrote in an article on XOJane.'

Here's a better photo of his shirt. As you can see it is highly offensive and sexist.

I'm aware that a lot of people are offended by trivial things.

In the business world, the new definition of sexual harassment is anything that would offend a prude.

So in other words, if a guy wears a shirt like that, its going to stop young women going to uni and pursuing extra nerdy career paths.

That argument is just as sexist as implies those young women are just that dumb.

The real reason there arent many women in the field is the same reason most guys dont try to be physicists, cos its extra nerdy and you dont make much money. Most go for degrees they think will earn them money

Wouldn't it be considered a success....say something large was headed for us...we might be able to land something on it and knock it out before it hit us....so this, in essence, is practice, too, no?

Scientifically it was a success. The chief purpose of the mission was to collect data on the isotope distribution of the comet. The end goal of this direction of research is to find out more about the early solar system, the formation of the earth and other solar system bodies.

It was however a failure for gender equality and feminism.

reminds me of the air force lt colonal who wore his brass upside down when being interviewed on cnn.

i think the point here, is if you're going to be interviewed on a major network, you really do need to consider what it is you're representing when choosing your atire. this isn't just a feminist issue. its more of a self respect and responsibility issue.

in another decade or two, that guy is going to look back and ask himself how he could possibly have been such an ass.
