I'm a zillow-holic. Yesterday's news of Detroit filing for chapter 9 bankruptcy prompted me to see what I could buy in Detroit for less than what I bought here in the big O. Man, I feel for the property owners of Detroit. Real estate isn't worth the cost of materials to make some of those houses. I saw seemingly decent, dare I say even nice, home listed for little as $7,000. I'm sure you would have to live in the hood but whatevs. With that said, I'm fucking glad that I don't actually live in Detroit.
Get a bunch of friends together and buy a whole neighborhood. Then put a reverse prison fence around the whole thing.
I had the chance to visit Detroilet a few years back for work. Never in my life have I seen so many abandoned and derelict buildings. I am not talking about just homes and small businesses, either, but high rise office buildings as well.
Yeah I've seen photos of skyscrapers with trees growing out of the roofs in Detroit. That place could really do with some TLC in my opinion.
I have family and friends in Detroit and surrounding areas. That state has the highest drug users, Highest domestic disputes etc. It has been failing for years. My little cousin was strung out of heroin at 15 years old. Go to southeast Detroit, A ghost town of junkies, Dealers and run down 'hobo rape shacks'. They can level that city and call it a day or the state for that matter. Its a flat out shithole that cant be saved.
No shit, right? On top of it, I was reading on CNN last night that the average response time for police officers is something like 40 minutes, whereas the national average is, if my memory serves me right, 11 minutes.
I wouldn't live in Detroit but home prices are awfully tempting... I saw a documentary about urban gardening in Detroit recently. Apparently it is flourishing because there are so many abandoned lots to use.
Everyone I knew from the D has gotten the fuck out over the past five years. I get D news here and I've been following the clusterfuck that is Detroit's municipal politics for over a decade now. Our crack-loven' Rob Ford has nothing on those muther-fuckers. Solid crazy ass shit.
Lucky for Toronto, they're already in a decent spot, so having a mayor that gets nothing done doesn't have huge negative effects.
http://www.vice.com/en_ca/uneven-terrain/detroit-lives-full-length i haven't watched this yet, but it seems interesting.
The easiest way to figure out what part of town to stay out of, is to look at a geocaching map of Detroit. Though, there are some in the middle of war zones and are labelled as high difficulty because of the danger factor.
