http://education.guardian.co.uk/schools/story/0,,2281067,00.html?gusrc=rss&feed=uknews Anyone remember Tonys Blair's mantra of "Education, Education, Education"? I find this very sad and depressing news. For a first world country in the 21st century to fail so badly in its education programme tells the tale that we are not the "advanced" country we like to think we are. If you can't educate your children, how can you possibly build a healthy, progressive society?
As a university lecturer, this doesn't surprise me at all. Every year I'm confronted with kids who have basically been failed by the secondary school system, who are unable to express themselves clearly and grammatically in English, and who think that the way to write an essay is to paste together a series of paragraphs from the www that match keywords in the essay title.
We live in a free society, if people want to be crap parents and choose to delegate responsibility to the state for educating there babies then it is their right to do so. Who says we should spend time and effort to make our children literate and numerate, the state will only use them for its own benefit, and they don't pay me to do so either.
Evidently some of these kids go on to get jobs as sub-editors at the Guardian, where they write headlines like That should be "one in five ... fails".
It's the grauniad, what d'you expect? As it happens, I know a few of these one in fives, the ones who had to do their GCSEs with a reader and a scribe when they're 16 and have no real special needs.
How about "Tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime"? A new study by criminologists at King's College London claims that Labour policies have had "no measurable impact" on youth crime. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7411909.stm
I remember it very well. Oh how everyone relished the idea of Labour Government. Even today there are still Labour devoters and they know who they are wink wink. Most have come to realise that Labour is a regressive party, not a progressive one. It is a government which is heading for the 80's,where interest rate was in double digits and where the housing market crashed and there was some economy troubles. I look forward to a New Tory movement. They may have made mistakes in the past, but that was then. I think labour today will be like Conservatives twenty years ago. But today, we need Tories in some ironic twist to undo all the damage that Labour continues to bash out at hardworkers, low earners and those who just want to drive into London. In July, it will cost over a grand a week for any heavy goods vehicle which doesn't pump out veg oil or peace of mind. Anyone who still thinks Labour have any credibility as Government, must have done gone bumped their craniums.
My housemates must think im going crazy due to exam stress... I say im off to bed because im tired...minuites lately.. Chesney hawkes blasts out from my room. I am the one and only.. nobody i;d rather beeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
How well you know me! It's true you know, I even had Jason Donovan as my ringtone after I travelled half way across the country to see him!
I was indeed referring to that very song in the title. Do you know the 808 State remix? That's rather good as well.
After 10 years of failed education policies, Neo-Labour has now resorted to bullying: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/7444822.stm
