After posting a comment on one of the other threads on here, I decided to stem off of what I had said regarding hunting. To me, I don't understand the point of hunting in this day and era. It's utterly pointless. Here's why I think so... First of all, considering that humans already have access to so much beef, steak, chicken, turkey, pork/ham/bacon, there is no need to kill deer, rabbits, or any other species of wild animals for food. Along with that, cotton, polyester, denim, etc. is extremely available to us... so the need to kill animals for their skins or fur is again, unnecessary. Then there is the excuse of over population. And, many hunters/supporters will use the excuse of, "During the winter, many of the deer do not survive anyway. Or they suffer." Now, my response to that is... Most hunters, if not all hunters, go for the big healthy deer. In other words, the very deer that WOULD survive the harsh winters. They do not prey on the sick, weakly deer who would suffer throughout a harsh winter, but instead they prey on the deer that are strong and healthy and WOULD survive inclement weather conditions. So, that excuse to me...is invalid and inappropriate. There is no NEED to hunt. And it irritates me to all hell when people actually pull excuses from their asses to validate the idea of hunting.
So you'd rather a person buy corporate farm raised and slaughtered animals than hunting one in the wild? I can see being against eating meat, but hunting seems a more humane way of doing it to me. if they are hunting something they don't eat, then I am against it, otherwise I think its fine, even though i don't do it.
Yeah seriously...here is why I, as a vegan, would rather people hunt for their own food than buy meat from a food store... 1. Many vegetarians already agree that meat is full of unhealthy hormones...if a person wants to continue eating meat but have fresh, healthy meat, hunting is a better alternative, many hunters agree with me at this point because a reason they like to hunt is because the meat is fresh and not full of unhealthy things our body doesn't need. 2. If an animal is killed in the wild, atleast it had time to live in the wild and not be caged for months...little baby cows are put in cages with no light access for months before they r killed so their flesh is nice and soft. Atleast these animals are able to live for whatever amount of time before they r killed. 3. If you hunt none of your money goes to the evil meat industry... Peace and Love, Dan
No, I agree with you... But, unfortunately that's not the way things are...unfortunately, on top of consuming the meat they've hunted they pig out on burgers, chicken nuggets, etc. I'm simply saying, that to kill another animal, though there are many other meats available is unnecessary. I can't word it the way I want to. If the meat industry wasn't huge, hunting would make more sense to me. But the fact that if you want a burger, it's readily available at your discretion ...to kill another animal for meat is wrong. And unnecessary. If I knew a person, who would not consume any meat, unless they have hunted it themselves, I'd find it understandable...unfortunately I dont know anyone that way.
The meat industry is indeed the problem. It candy-coats what would otherwise be a defining trait in humans: the ability to kill. I wish all meat eaters were forced to kill their own food. That would separate the carnivores from the hypocrites. If you've got what it takes to walk up to Bambi, blow her brains out, gut her and eat her, then you're a carnivore. Everyone else is just a bad vegetarian. GREAT point. I just had to quote it again, in case someone missed it the 1st time. Another good point. But while I agree that there's no NEED to hunt, I recognize that some creatures have a certain instinct to kill things. *shrug* I wouldn't presume to dictate morality to a wolf, so I'll take the same approach with hunters. But yeah, I can't stand hunters who try to find excuses for hunting. C'mon, Davy Crockett... just say it, and I'll respect your wishes... say "I like to kill things!"

But the fact that if you want a burger, it's readily available at your discretion ...to kill another animal for meat is wrong. And unnecessary. If someone hunts to eat, then they are not buying that meat from other sources. I'm still not understanding you. Why is it better to eat an animal someone else has killed instead of one you did? Also, most people hunt deer, which DO overpopulate due to lack of predators.
good debate, and all these are very familiar arguments. so, i put it this way...... i have not the will nor the courage to kill an animal with my own hands, therefore, i shall not eat meat. i have freinds whom can do this, and so they do eat what they kill for means of health and survival. i also know many many people who have not the courage to kill, yet they feel the need, so they buy their meat on styrofoam platters, headless, nameless, completely unidentifiable. i totally respect the first two choices, but i have a hard time understanding the 3rd practice. for people who hunt for trophy, tisk tisk, shame on them. this is an egotisticl sport, with a total lack of respect for our fellow earth mates, and for their own concionce. for those people who hunt to fill their frezzers for the winter for them and their families, i applaud you. you have found ways of nurturing yourselfs from this great bounty provided for us. but when they also fill it with faceless hamburger, chicken breasts, or whatever else the slaughter houses provide, this doesnt quite jive with me. in my community, i know many ranchers, whom provide families with good, organic, free range meat, and you can go to the source, and put a face on these animals. now this is a much favoured method to me, as these livestock really do have a good life. i am very much against the farming industry in the large scale, such as feedlots, and chicken warehouses. if we (not me par say...) all purchased animals from local farms, or relied on hunting and fishing for our means of providing food, then it would be a better world. in saying that, we as a society have been brainwashed by the cattle assoc. to consume a HUGE amount of animal, and animal by-products. some people eat meat 3 times a day, every day!! this is not neccesary!! we have a very hard time digesting these foods, and it is a waste. if we choose to eat meat, we should all be able to identify, and pay our respects for the offering of the meat. not everyone is able to go completely vegetarian, it has alot to do with blood type. but we ALL have the power to be aware, and respectful when it comes to feeding ourselfs. and who would want to eat all that antibiotic riddles meat anyways?!?!
perfect world? we'd all be veggie. Reality?? some will eat meat. I'd rather a family fill the freezer with game than perpetuate the insanity of factory farms and feedlots. Usually, a sustenence hunter will use everything (or give what they don't to the meat locker which then adds it to sausage orders).
Not only that is the Hunter license fee that keep this animal safe the rest of the year. and only a few are kill during hunting season and prob more get kill from roadside accidents with vehicles . hundreds of deer die from vehicles impact all year long.
i dont know. hunting enables one to listen and become in tune with the universe, some animals in the forest are probably more than ready for death. where as in a factory farm, being in tune with the universe has probably never even crossed the mind of any of the folks who have anything to do with them. and sometimes its totally appropriate to kill an animal, if its suffering or already dying or something else. but how are you going to do that humanely with whats simply surrounding you? i guess this is where investing in a gun or something could actually be a positive thing and prove to do more good than bad when the time calls for it. plus, you said cotton is widely available to us, and while i agree we have more than enough materials for clothing to go around, cotton is not the most environmentally friendly product. cotton is nearly impossible to grow without pesticides or insecticides. its often field grown near peanuts which is why it is a good idea to buy organic peanuts and organic pads if you buy anything thats organic, since not many chemical restrictions apply to cotton since it isnt grown for human consumption. not to say that buying anything you can thats organic isnt a really good idea, but you have to pick your battles sometimes i guess and organic stuff probably isnt widely available everywhere yet. and i doubt polyester is either since it is a by product of oil someone told me recently. then you have to ask yourself what is more important, the animals or the world itself? i guess it depends on your own personal beliefs and philosophy, but i sordove believe in the gaia theory that the world is alive, and i tend to really value the environment now. if i had it my way though which i rarely do(lol), everything would be made from nice green sustainable hemp : ) and i have to agree with angel headed hipster, i support hunting way more than i do the practice of say eating hamburgers on a regular basis. but i definatley would try to promote hunting with respect when i can, as opposed to say shooting ducks for target practice.
instead it merely goes to the evil gun and ammunition industry. i'd rather support the meat industry than the gun industry.
well that was interesting, lol... i dont know, guns dont kill people, do they? ..... prohibition has never worked with anything, including drugs or guns as im sure you know. what makes you think prohibiting guns would work now? then the people who still have them would be fuckin everyone up who didnt. prohibiting factory farms seems like a little more of a practical goal. or prohibiting brainwashing maybe, but i guess thats really shooting for the stars.
Yes, sorry if you're not understanding, I can't find words for it. All that I'm trying to say is that I have never come across a hunter who doesn't support the meat industry on top of that. If I came across a hunter who solely obtained his or her meat from hunting, I'd understand, and I wouldn't be so against it [although I'm not for the killing of animals period...I know that the majority of people in society DO eat meat.] Does that sound better? I am agreeing with you, but I'm saying to do both is almost greedy or selfish. To hunt an animal, plus support the meat industry on almost a daily basis is absurd to me.
You've all made great points, and I'm not disagreeing with any... I guess, I just wish there was a better way to equal things out. I suppose that IS only in a perfect world. Not so much on the idea of hunting but going along with hunting, I just have to state how disgusted I am with what the DNR was trying to pass in the state of Wisconsin... to lower the age of hunting which was already at 12. They wanted to lower it to 10 years old. I haven't followed up on it, but I'm sure it most likey didn't go through... But 10?! To me, a 10 year old still is such a young child... to put a gun in a 10 year old's hand is almost ASKING for trouble.
I drove my father cars when i was 11 . you think all 10 year olds are retarted ? granted extra care and training must take place before i hand over a gun to a 10 year old. some kids do fine and others simply are not mature enough or have a physical size to handle a gun. There are 10 year olds right now that well make circles around you handling a computer.
Thats like saying even tho 400.000 american get kill each year in vehicles accidents they still buy a car from Detroit or Japan SO they support the killing of humans.
