Hey I've noticed recently that I'm getting a lot of flak for using the word "chicks instead of women. Whats the deal? I don't mean it disrespectfuly and I include no derogatory statements when using it. Why is it that the word offends? Its how I talk, I can't help it.

I don't know...it's probably just because they can't find anything better to bitch about. It doesn't bother me.

i catch the same flak online for that...ironically, no one has ever got upset, or shown any signs of not approving in real life....however, it seems a lot of women online care, for some reason. Maybe its just easier to express their feelings online, then in person.

lol Thanks... I just dont get why it would offend. Heh... If they didn't have someone to fight they'd be fighting each other I guess?

I use the word, but I challenge someone to trace its root. Answer later.
THe word use is situational. At work, I am definitely not a "chick."
I'm a woman, and a professional at that, so chick would demean the work I do in the eyes of others.
That's why males over a certain age become guys and then (hopefully) men.
What truly makes me wonder is women who answer to "guys."
I'm not a guy. Whay should I answer to "Hey, you guys?"
    Would males answer to "gals?"

Y'know, "Goddess" would work, or "Universal Queen." ;P

its just tradition, albeit sexist i guess....that in any collection...if there is one male you address them as Guys, men or whatever. Even if its 100 women and 1 guy...its "guys."

But i agree, "chick" shouldnt be used at work or any formal occassion...its a non formal thing with friends, IMO.

Chicks doesn't bother me. I find the term chicks to just be a hip word like calling some groovy people cats.

You see where i work, there are only 3 guys and the rest of all the people are women. So , they are accustomed to saying "hey ladies" or "good morning ladies", "yes maam" and the thing is they say these things when I am there...and I respond to it. Its not so embarrassing for them if I respond... Usually at first they used to say "hi ladies... and one gentleman :)" but they don't do that anymore, because now they just say "hey ladies" even i am there... cuz i didn't mind to respond when they say "good morning ladies" .. so it doesn't matter. Why?- because I make no distinction- whether it is a guy or a girl i talk with them the same way.

You see, when you see people as "people" rather than men /women, "black/white" , "red / yellow"... you will achieve the equinimity or peace in life. So, the wise thing to do would be to understand that these things come up and just go with the flow... just because they say "hey gals" doesn't mean that I shouldn't respond if i am in the group... unless they say "only gals from here should do this"... and to achieve such equinimity you shouldn't be too self conscious, you should think of yourself as a normal human being. If we are self conscious about ourselves then we see ourselves as different, as being seperate and keep the biases that exist, make up an ego to go with it and make a mess of every single small problem that comes up. So... we shouldn't think in duality, but we should think in equinimity... then alone will we be ever happy.

I use the word "chick" all the time. It's just the way I talk. I think it's a word that can be used in a demeaning way, but can also be used in a casual way. The way I see it: chicks are cute, and so are girls. It's like a compliment. :)

Besides, it's a lot better than "whore".

That's hardly a reason to use a word. we are either cute or whores? Do you KNOW what feminist means?

And yeah, I do know what feminist means. It's a person who believes in equality between males and females. Not a woman who takes offense at stupid words. Not a woman who yells at another woman for using that word, but admits that she uses it herself. Looks like you need a little refreshing one the meaning of the word, not me.

OH OH! Does it mean mass generalization of one type of person, regardless of their beliefs? Is it about fighting for stupid shit like words instead of issues that really matter? Sheesh.

Does it matter if a group of femals is adressed as "You guys"? I have NEVER used the word gals in my entire life. I dont use guys in refrence to males, or females, but a group. Does it matter? Am an evil person for using any word without thinking "is this a sexist word?"

    No, Dark Lunacy, you aren't.
I simply said I wonder about the everyone-is-a guy mentality. Sort of male by defualt in the lingual culture. Notice I don't use "womyn," since I'm a word purist. (damn Virgos)
Now that you mention it, I never heard "gals" in Texas much, but it is used a lot in Colorado... hmmmmmm.... but I live in a town where the residents will choke if they refer to a female as a woman. It's "ladies" and "girls." "Gals" is for enlightened sorts, who think we can wear shoes. Oh my. Off the chart on the hickometer.

I equate the word "chicks" with the word "dudes". Doesn't bother me, as long as it's used in an informal context.

yep, i agree with you there.

i think i hate the word 'bird' more. as in "she's a great lookin bird"...

and i cant stand it when people call girls "bitches". as in "she's my bitch", not "damn she's a stupid bitch". (i think the latter is more valid in some circumstances:p).
