How does one survive in this world without becoming completely jaded, cynical and reclusive?
Personally I find it difficult to stay positive because everyday I see many examples of self centred f***tard humans everywhere. Not only in my immediate surroundings but also in the media. It really tends to wear me down. I try to avoid the news these days because I dont see the point of watching stuff everyday that makes me feel like slashing my wrists. It really is so negative.
One thing that I just dont get is the way people leave their garbage everywhere. I live in a beautiful part of the world with some of the most amazingly pristine beaches but everyday shitloads of tourists come to these beaches and when they leave they just leave their garbage strewn everywhere all over the beach including plastic bags and cigarette butts both of which get washed out to sea and kill the marine animals and birds. I dont understand the mentality of these people and to be honest if I had to make a choice between killing them or killing the marine animals the animals would win hands down because people who take this planet for granted in such an appalling way dont deserve to be here.
I also see people flicking their butts from their cars. They dont want their precious cars to stink but they dont give a shit about wrecking the planet!
These two things are pretty minor (although just as relevant) compared to some of the bigger atrocities happening such as the Ugandans deciding to execute gay people but I wont go on as there are countless more examples of this kind of ignorance.
How do you not let these things drive you to depression, insanity and ultimately suicide?

You are at an excellent point in life... a point at which you recognize that you have very little power in the world but you do recognize a need to make a difference. So now you assess the bit of power you do have and decide how to maximize it. Either that or give in completely and fall to depression and maddness. Decades ago, when I was fresh out of the Army and angry at the world one of my Prof's said "protesting the war is fine but someone within 5 miles of where you stand needs help". Or in other worlds, Think Globally, Act Locally. For me the release of frustration came in working with kids, especially kids who had been victims of abuse and neglect. Volunteering to work was a step that lead to a lifelong path. The kids I worked with in the early 70's are now the parents of their own kids. They are passing along values that respect the Earth and all its living ceatures. Trees that my kids and I planted in the 70's are now fine tall groves that are part of a healthy environment.

I had to accept that I could do little to affect the overall madness of the world but I could touch a small cornor of the world and nuture it into health. So you are at an excellent point in life where-in you have to search your soul to find where you are needed and best able to help.
Rather than let it beat you into a useless victim, learn how to counter the negative.

Yeah, I know, pretty philisophical but sometimes the call to action starts with a whisper instead of a shout. Find your place and be glad you are one of those who chooses to be part of the solution. Good Luck.

Thanks for you insight. :) I agree with what youre saying. I dont want to be a helpless victim. I really want to find a way to contribute and do good things for the earth. Its hard sometimes but I guess what doesnt kill me makes me stronger. :)

a 'helpless victim'? come on! stupid people and societal BS make you want to kill yourself? how did your ancestors survive till the 21st century? yes, a lot of life is about an individual struggling against his environment/fellow 'citizens' and you come across situations and people that will really frustrate the hell out of you. if you let this get to you, then you'll never get anywhere in life. and starting to victimize oneself for it is just pathetic.

Agree with meridan, sometimes I feel like that but then I think of how stupid I'm being and start studying or entertaining myself.
