    Interesting question.

But people don't earn my respect. They already have it until they lose it.

They CAN however, earn my ADMIRATION. But that is mostly intangible.

by not EARNING my contempt. i respect EVERYone on general principals until they do.

i mean up to a point of course. but then, that's generally the same point at which my contempt is earned. demanding respect is probably the fastest way to earn contempt.

    I completely agree with Praxiskepsis!

And also by not taking advantage of my kindness and mistaking it for weakness.

I finished an exam the other week, and was sitting in the lounge listening to these two people argue about this same exact thing. this one dude was saying that no one is worthy of respect until they earned it, so the other guy asked him about his family, and the first guy ended up saying something along the lines of how he had no respect for his mother because she was intellectually inferior to his greatness and mis-uses the word "semantics" a lot.

    wow people are stupid.

    lost my respect.

this is how I'd like it to be for me. unfortunately, I know I still sometimes judge people before I know them so if someone gives off the wrong impression some way, I might respect them less for no real reason.

but yeah. people are human and so am I, I have at least that one thing in common with everyone else, so they deserve my respect until they show me they don't.

this is a great point as well. agreed.
