When you guys write poetry, do you usually just sit down and write, because you choose to write; or do you only write when you suddenly feel inspired, perhaps building a poem around a few lines that popped full-formed into your head? I find myself falling into the latter category. Not that I don't know what I intend to write or what I'm saying, but it seems mostly spontaneous for me. If I just sat down and said "ok, today I'm going to write a poem about flowers" it would come off terribly.

I don't have a specific way in which I write. Sometimes I just feel inspired, and start writing whatever I feel. Sometimes I have a thought or feeling which I want to express, and I try to figure out the best way to express it, then do it.

One thing I know for sure: you can't just sit down and say "I want to write a poem now." And even worse is "Today, I will write my best poem."

Sometimes it just hits me, sometimes I have a few lines beating around and the poem seems to finally arise from it but usually the thought or idea has kicked around in my brain for a bit.

depends really, generally an impulsive desire that starts in several places around me, and then sort of punches me in the face and walla! i have a poem

I'll just sit down and write poetry sometimes; nothing very interesting is ever produced from this method though (at least for me). But poems that involve inspiration... I just have to put down whatever I'm doing, even schoolwork, and write. I can't help it; I'm just driven to express that thought train. I've actually turned out some rather amazing poems/stories/articles so far from inspiration.

I'm the same way. I'll be watching tv, or at work, or meditating. It doesn't matter, I have to get a pen and paper and get it out. Thats the best, when it comes unbidden, just flowing onto the paper (or computer). Poetry like that is easy and often pretty good.

The only time i ever write a poem, is the time i sit down to write one.The words they find my head their home; I need to coax them out and excite them.
