in my personal opinion? i want my five quid and two and a half hours back. but i've heard others who think it was quite good, so maybe i'm not the best judge.

Given the rich subject matter it was actually fairly dissapointing visually, there were some fairly interesting designs ( the queens guards are quite well imagined, for instance) but given the creative freedom of for example just being given the word "bandersnatch" and having to come up with a creature based on that word alone, the design was fairly generic and dull. stephen fry as the Cheshire cat ROCKS they couldnt have cast a better voice actor. johnny depp was slightly dissapointing (which is a shame cos im quite a fan of his) and alan rickmans chracter was pretty cool (mainly because he stayed true to the original story by being really bloody rude to alice rather than treating her like the sun shines out of her arse, as everyone else seems to)

i guess it would be fairly trippy if i was on shrooms or acid at the time (as it was i was just slightly stoned) but it genuinely didn't hold my attention throughout the film (some bits did, but on the whole i didn't find it that impressive)

my main issue (and this is where i go on a rant and get labelled a "purist" which i guess i am, but...well....shut up, thats why) was with the plot. i realise that alice is quite a hard book to realise in film form. as its fairly removed from conventional childrens books in terms of structure, but, to me thats the charm of it. Alice in wonderland isn't a trippy book- it IS a trip. a journey in which one puts aside conventional logic for a genuine adventure, you genuinely don't know what'll happen next because it doesn't conform to any conventional storytelling framework. This is not the case with Tim burtons film. within the first half an hour, you can predict the ENTIRE plot of the rest of the movie, what was once intrigueing has now been dragged, kicking and screaming into the generic narrative Thousands of childrens (and adults) films. the plot is similar to Narnia (in a world where "similar" means "more or less identical") and i wasn't angry about it at all, i was just slightly dissapointed. This isnt a BAD film, in many ways its very good indeed, its just that it could have been SO much more, and for me, it will always be in the shadow of its own wasted potential.

if i were you i'd rent "dreamchild" the 80's remake of the sixties film version. its not a conventional telling of the story, its about the true story of the girl its based on, now an old woman. goes on a bit but but the sequences where she imagines the scenes from the book are amazing- Jim Henson creates the puppets of all the characters, and some still haunt my dreams lol

apologies if this went on for ages, but i am an english and film student so whatcha gonna do?

tons of threads on this movie.. go search for some...

seems most peoples opinion boils down to it was .. "okay" it is definitely a kids movie even though everything is dark.. i don't mean dark like depressed mysterious dark.. i mean like black and gray and brown dark.. burnt.

not really worth seeing it in 3-d either.

Idk but i'm betting Todd McFarlane's OZ is going to be better

Burton and the crew are going to do fine the rest of their existance, alice was just a letdown. Should have cast Avril as the lead and not the 'hit-single' girl

Very dissapointing. I really like Burton and Depp - but I really love the book - and this film did not do it justice in any way. And it simplified it too and turned it into a riducluous good vs evil deal. And dont even get me started on the "dance" at the end.
    Bah!

it didnt meet up to expectations but its also underated with all the crap its recieved.

its a good movie helena bonham does a crazy job with this, the white queen is crazy imo lol, and the rest of the cast does a solid job, its eye candy is wonderful the people who hate on this are your typical bullsh*tters who take everything too damn seriously to enjoy a movie.. i do however wish they chose a different Alice, it seemed that girl was just reading lines
