Hey, im almost at the 20 week mark, and i have about 10 out of what used to be like 60 or so dreads that are still knotting up and getting tighter. And im looking for something to help a few dreads along, and to make my hair look a little more stylish. I thought there was a thread on this somewhere here, but I cant find it. If I remember correctly, you need hemp string. Anyone have an idea of where I can find that? or can I use another type of string? Also, whats the "technique" in wrapping a dread so that it stays tied up and stylish?

you guys are great, thanks in advance.

hemp is fine...you can use plain hemp or colored hemp, and there are a few different ways to wrap it, but this is how i do it.....and most people do....

look at pictures 3, 4, and 5...that is what you need to do...and just do it over and over again.

Or you can simply wrap the string around the dread repeatedly. It will not make a cool design, but it will do the job.

I use wool, or strips of material, anything really. I just wrap it anyway around my dread. Or to do it neater, grab few colours, hold one out, the rest hold with the dread, then wrap it around, swaping as you go further down the dread.

Very bad to wrap them this soon IMO. Your hair is still knotting up, the string will either get stuck and embedded in your dreads and be a huge pain to get out or it will hinder the locking process, more likely than not.

Well I just got done wrapping a dread! it has some gaps in it and the thread looks messy, but I am fine with it. Dreadlocks have nothing perfect about them. Thank you again for your help!
