seriously. After finishing uni, what is there to do? all i can find are telemarketing jobs...fucking shite. I just don't see myself being able to get a job and afford renting a place. I'm feeling really down at the moment. this city is bloody expensive, I spend so much money commuting, and just covering my essential needs. I want to become independent and be able to afford having a quiet life. how do you people do it?

I know what you mean. If your whole life thus far has been focussed on getting your degree, what do you do after? Well, you could always do an MA, or a PhD, and you know what they cay. Those who can't, teach! And those who can't teach, teach teachers....

Most jobs where you work for other people in a commercial setting will pay you less than your earning the person who employs you .

I think your in london and I dont know that much about living there, myself Id try somewhere smaller maybe as you can do a job like telemarketing anywhere and prices for houses and flats are cheaper outside london .

My sisters old university of lampeter or somewhere that has a small uni in the middle of nowhere would be a good place to work as you get low house prices and the possibility of employment .

what sort of money do these telemarketing jobs pay and what are your outgoings in the big city, have you looked at smaller citys like bristol say

I think this story is the same for a lot of us grads. I'm in my second year at Portsmouth and I'll be screwed once I graduate and get back to Bristol. I did a quick search and found a grand total of four jobs in my industry (Systems administrator etc) from three different job sites. I could only apply for two of them!

I would love to live an alternative lifestyle. I'm a vegan, so I wanna keep my own chickens for their eggs lol

    Try trucking.

Degrees, diplomas, MBAs and MBES, people all crave a title for themselves, whether it be Doctor this or professor that or Clinical analyst. Once you have a title and your academic stuff is over. Figure what courses you did and what they lead onto in terms of jobs. Once you have established that then you can aim high and aim higher until you are a very wealthy Englishmouse.

Qualifications are not everything. Infact Carol Vorderman is an egghead what with all her degrees and diplomas and lots and lots of visits to Cambridge. But for the last ten years, she has been confined to Countdown. I doubt channel four pay a wage that suits her qualifications.

But sometimes anyone can get a job and climb up the job ladder to the plains of Godly wealth.

LOL Hence why Ms Vorderman has to do those crappy adverts :)

The current CEO [of IBM], Sam Palmisano, for example, joined the company as a salesman and, unusually for CEOs of major corporations, has no MBA or postgraduate qualification. - Wiki/Ibm

Their gay rights are apparently very good too. Good to know some businesses at least try to be nice! :)

You all sound like a right sad bunch of students. You really all should get your hair cut and join the army you layabouts !!! all you moaning minnies should not be a burden to the state, with your degree you could easily get a job with the forces. Stop pushing my tax bill up and do something useful.
Bloody hippies, think a job will drop out of the sky or what???

Academic qualifications are not as important today unless you want to be a doctor or a psychologist for example. However a few employers still stick to the prinicipal that no qualifications = no skills. It is a bit like when I had an interview for a bar job. The guy didn't employ me for lack of qualifications or degrees. I have over a year experience in many bar establishments. I mean what is the point in having a degree in psychology when running a bar?

Er, I thought this website was for hippies, it's called hipforums after all.

Zeppelina, what was your degree in? Could you do something related to that?

Also, many big companies offer graduate training schemes and recruit at job fairs. They usually offer a decent starting salary, but obviously it depends what you want to do. Maybe you could try getting some career guidance from your uni to give you some ideas.

Heads up to the stoned guy lol I'm there now man...

I thought graduate jobs weren't always in the area you studied in; just like generic management?

I believe Ronald was being sarcastic or ironic. Ahh! And so were you! This is good stuff.
