Hello All, I just came across this site, looks like a pretty awesome place to meet some other people that I may have a lot in common with. I am from upper Michigan, I don't ever see alot of hippies in my town so it's hard to hang out with people like me. Of course I don't go out much so maybe I am wrong. My question is do a lot of you out there drive vehicles? My car just broke down and I can't afford to put insurance on it so I am thinking that I will give up the whole driving scene and just walk everywhere. I mean that's what we have legs for right? I think there is a class of hippies out there. Some are really dedicated to protecting the enviorment and others drive Volkswagen Buses and some are even in between. I think I am the type who is in between. What is everyone's take on this? Danny
Im only 17, so ive only really been given the choice to learn to drive this year. most of my friends have allready passed their test, have a car or are learning. but to be fair i dont want to learn to drive cars are bad for the environment and your health (especially if you crash) the roads are clogged enough as it is the world is small enough to walk
i have to personal vehicles an a company vehicle.. i drive about 1200 miles a week.. mostly fer work.. if this is a throw yer car away thread.. just remember,, when the whole world is left whithout transportation,,yer stuck walkin yer ass outta where ya are,,an so will everyone else.. man whatta movie that would make.
I have a car, because I'd never get everywhere I need to be without one. There aren't enough hours in my day to walk everywhere: school, dance, track, work, home, etc. But it's a little car, not a gas-guzzling SUV or anything, and I save gas by driving conservatively. So it's not thaaaaaat bad...
Every time you gas up your car you are encouraging your government to maintain brutal control over oil producing countries.
Wait until the "hybrid revolution" kicks in.... I like you. SUVs are the worst type of automobile in my opinion, not just cause of the danger they put into the environment, but there huge size poses a threat to people driving smaller vehicles or little deer that lack the intelligence to get outta the SUVs headlights. And most of the time you see SUVs, there's only ONE person in that huge mess...
i just got my lisence in January, and i got a car. it was my sisters '87 volvo. its an alright car. But I wouldnt walk everywhere. I would give up half way. I know thats terrible, but im a lazy person haha. I dont drive all the time, only when i need to go somewhere. Plus i live far away from everything. if i were to walk into my town, or even to like school, it would take an hour maybe. thats a long time. I really want to get a car that uses that new corn oil stuff. it looks interesting and is said to be better for the environment. I mean its a step toward helping the earth out. Not soooo much pollution. Peace~
I drive only when i have to, long distances & such. I don't like cars for many reasons... environmentally & as a way of life. I think it tends to make people lazy. also people seem to be so nervous in city roads... I don't want to get myself into that. again, only if i must.
I don't think I could stop driving eiether. It's too much a neccessity now. People love there cars too much for that to ever happen. I think I am just looking for a change, just completely wipe out my how outlook on life. Stop driving a car, become a vegan, give up on tv and electric, probably have to live in a tent and shit in a hole, dance naked in the rain, sounds like a pretty good life to me. This whole week has been really weird, I can't stop thinking that we are all going about life in the wrong way. People are dying everyday just so us americans can keep our flippin cars on the road. It's like we literally live for oil, mean while others are dying just we can have it. People are so obsessed with having things and showing them off to others. People spend there whole lifes trying to build a material life when in the end WE CAN'T TAKE IT WITH US, IT'S GONE MAN. I'm so confused. AWWWWW... Danny
I don't own a car now, and even when i did, i used my bike far more often. Some people need cars for work and long trips, and they are nice to have, especially if you live where the weather sucks (though Madison, WI has one of the highest levels of bike use in America). I just don't understand why people need them for every little trip. Short little trips are hard on cars. The last two years I had i car, I had almost no maintenance costs, and have had far less than average maintenance costs for any vehicle i've owned. There's also a lot of other short trip hassles, like road rage and parking. It is a total myth that bikes are not safe compared to cars. SUV's are not only more dangerous than regular cars for everyone else, they may be more dangerous for the driver. Ironically enough, some bike owners buy big gas guzzlers to carry their bike to trailheads, it is much better to just get a nice car rack. http://www.kenkifer.com/bikepages/health/risks.htm http://www.suv.org/safety.html
I'm learning to drive at the moment....and of course i'll drive places if its too far to walk/cycle in a reasonable amount of time Generally I ride my bike or walk though
I can drive, but don't have a car. At the moment that's fine because I live in a city where pretty much everything I need is walking distance, and the buses run till very late at night for those places that aren't (though in rush hour it's still best to walk, the traffic is so bad the bus takes way longer). Not saying I'll never get a car, just right now there's really no need for one
I currently drive a 94 Chevy Blazer, not that I want to but I was a salesman last year without a vehicle and my home base was 45 minutes away, I'll tell you one thing hitchhiking in dress clothes in the winter isnt a good thing. I managed to get back and forth from my work for about 30 days by hitchhiking but it was rough. After that I decided it was about time for a car so I broke down and bought one and it sucks because it's a gas hog. I feel though that cars are needed in most everyday life, there isnt enough people out there anymore who will pick up hitchhikers, everything is so spread out, jobs require them and so on.
