How long does it take to get addicted to vicodin?

I re-herniated a disc (L5-S1). I'm back on Vicodin. I'm taking 3 5/500's a day. At this pace how until I'm addicted to them?

 

well you gotta ask yourself the question are you taking them for relief or for pleasure.. and then that there determines when you will/be addicted to them

 

Purely for pain relief. I quit taking pain pills 24 hours after my last surgery. I dislike pills. I'll be taking 3 a day this week. My guess is that I'll be at 4 a day by next week, and will probably stick with 4 a day until surgery.

I suppose I should mention that I'm also takng 2 muscle relaxers a day (10mg Flexiril's).

 

my best suggestion is just stick with taking 3 a day.. if the pain starts to worsen then go in and tell your doctor and he may up your dosage or give you something different..

 

Well it's says take 1-2 pills every 6 hours. I've just been taking 1 at a time. Might have to go to 1 and 1/2 at a time by next week. I'd still be below the max prescribed doseage though.

 

addictions can't really be tracked, but if they're for pain not pleasure, than you're good i guess.

 

for me, ive done so many vicoden and xanax in the past that if i take 1 pill, i will have slight noticable withdrawal symptoms starting the next day that peak 48 hours after taking it. thats just my own personal reaction though.

 

I would imagine it would take quite some time to become physcially addicted from 15 mgs a day, I said 6 weeks but it could be longer. The only times I've gotten serious withdrawal symptoms from opiates was when I was doing 60- 100 mgs of oxy ( normally 80) everyday for 3 weeks - month.

 

Right on. Thanks for the help all. I think I'll have my surgery in the next 2 weeks. That will be less than 4 weeks on the Vics. Should be good to go.

 

i took about 10 5/500 a day for about 2 years, but i only had 2 bad days of withdrawl, so one month at a prescribed dosage shouldnt get you hooked. gl with the surgery!
