alright - i know austin has a great rep and all...but is it happenin only in terms of texas, or is it truly a cool place? i'm lookin to relocate out towards west, and would never have considered anywhere in texas. however, so many people are sayin good things about austin, it's making me curious. is it liberal? is it one of those real liberal places in the middle of ultra conservatism?
what is rent like? i hear the music scene's great! weather?
any personal insight would be great.
    thanks!

The only place in texas I would recommend is Austin. The weather is very hot in the summer.

I love Austin, live shows every weekend. Great festivals every couple of months. Best city in TX by far.

Austin IS Texas! The rest of this state has to pay attention to Austin, Austin doesn't have to pay attention to the rest of the state.

my mom's best friend has lived all over the country, including NYC, and he keeps coming back to austin. he calls it a "bubble" and "the san francisco of the south" and "a hippie town". the fact that he'd choose it over his loft by central park in NYC, i think, speaks volumes

yea austin is the shit. hippie town... liberal town... but there's a lot of love there. it's like a community of liberal hippies. not like nyc or cali or some other liberal places where people are dicks...lol but yea austin is the shit. It's where I plan on ending up.

Austin's a great place to live but the cost of living is pretty high. You might want to check out rents before moving here, and property taxes are high, but no state income tax--yet!

I wouldn't call austin that much of a hippy town, it has hippy elements but so far my experience has been more of capitalism with liberal intentions.

eh ive only been there once or twice so you're probably right. i did see a lot of 'hippie' stuff you wouldn't see anywhere else though. i guess you just have to be in the right places

Don't get me wrong, there are more hippy elements in austin than some cities, but the majority of the style of the city seems to be extremely yuppie, added with an element of ersatz hippy "look at me i get stoned, i listen to live music, i must be a hippy"...

Maybe its the area of the town I live in, maybe I'm just being jaded, but the keep austin wierd atmosphere that gets re-presented a lot seems to be just an advertising front to keep the tourist bucks flowing.

Out of the many many new faces I've met over about two years of living here now only a few of them have what I would call a hippy attitude, most would quickly turn their backs on their brothers and the world for money and status.

    Howdy,
Gotta add my thoughts here. I have been travlin all my life, and even these days. Although Austin has grown so big I even dont know all of it anymore, it is still one of the most friendly citys in the US. And yes we have Hippie Church, we have alot of hippies here, and I feel comfortable in my own skin here. There is alot of activism. I guess if ya want to get all negative, sure just like everwheres else these days ya got the bs too, we are just lucky enough to have alot of other groovy stuff goin on! Smile, if ya feel negative, go to Wavy Gravys site, look at his message, always reminds me to be a good hippie! Many Hugs,,, Feelin the Love,,, Peace!*

I guess it is one of the better cities to live in, otherwise I wouldn't have crossed the pond to stay here, and pricks are like roaches - you get them in every city and they'll be the only things to survive a nuclear war. Maybe i just got a bad patch of life at the moment cos I'm seeing a lot of things in negative at the moment.

I haven't heard of the hippy church tho? whats that about?
