In most cases the 'service' is evil whether compulsory (eg. tax) or voluntary (eg. military).

But in some cases the service is good when voluntary (eg. charity) but made evil when compulsory (eg. charity).

Yes. The whole joy of giving is tainted if the receiver of the charity is expecting it. I never liked the feeling of obligation to give some people gifts when I really didn't think that much of them. The more someone tries to coerce another into doing something, the more they will resist. It is human nature, I think.

If you are obligated to give, it is not from the heart and becomes meaningless in a spiritual sense. Sure, the material changes hands all the same, but the spirit is lost.
If I hear someone say that they are expecting a certain dollar value gift from someone or else they will be disappointed, I am totally nonplussed.
It is only charity if it is given freely, just like the old Dracula rule, "Enter, and of your own free will........"
