Does it bother you? Is it enough to make you not want to eat it? I am ok with buying meat that was already dead I do not think I could kill it just to eat it
I think that is a noble way to approach it Do you believe as some do that fish are not sentient beings?
Great post here. Wish I could rep you. This type of thing used to bother me. But the longer I am in the jungle, the more my perspective has changed. Nature is a heartless killing factory. That is the way it is.
I believe they are a lower level of consciousness but no, I do not believe they are not sentient beings. However, they are good for you and I think it is very natural to me to eat fish, and it's the only animal I've ever caught and killed myself. So I don't feel terrible about eating them, though I try not to do it often and I prefer tilapia that are sustainably harvested.
what if you have to do it ? humans are predators. the circumstances and your civilized way of life makes you think you cannot, would not kill and animal and eat it afterwards. but if you need to do it you do it. i would not think twice if i know this is the only way to get food. probably i would not suceed because i am a lame modern girl, but i sure will try if i have to.
If it were a survival situation sure I would eat meat or whatever's available to stay alive. But I am a pampered fool so I avoid it. In my eyes it's an evolutionary step to do so. But it's easy for me.. I never liked meat much anyway. My dad eats meat, but he only eats free-range, organic, sustainably harvested meat. I approve of that. I think it's unfortunate that only a privileged few have access to that, though. Good meat is a luxury. Bad meat is ubiquitous.
Yes, I know. I suppose I just am a little jaded. I really love the animals. It is just every week I see the violence and the beauty. It breaks my heart but at the same time it is the cycle of things. Total order in the chaos. Thank god I have a month long vacation coming up.
Yeah, I'm not gonna cry about it. So it goes, c'est la vie. There is definitely a great deal of beauty in this organized chaos. A glorious paradox. But it's really sad how unnatural our consumption of meat has become. I don't think it's at all natural to gobble down a previously frozen patty of hormone-filled beef that was taken from a cow that was likely just strong enough to stumble into the slaughter house. That's just sad. If animals were raised humanely I would be okay with eating them. Death is natural, but torture is not.
I don't know how you can claim that torture isn't natural. It will take me all damn day just to list animals who eat their pray alive. It's only us humans who refer to it as "torture". All in all, we are no superior or inferior than animals. The whole concept of morality is pointless when it comes to such comparisons, same with what we perceive as our apparent intelligence and so on. Hell, I can easily support the theory that ants are much more intelligent than us.
I'm a firm believer that if you can't look at an animal your going to eat in the eyes, then you probably shouldn't be eating it.
