Oh that tradition..to explain it further, if a husband accused his wife of not being a virgin on their wedding night (aka: lack of a hymen or blood) upon penetration, he could accuse her and she would be put to death IF there was no proof provided by her family proving she indeed was a virgin.


But if her parents could basically prove she was a virgin, the evidence being the cloth that absorbed her hymen blood upon when it broke from some other means, then the conditions flip.

Meaning the husband who accused his wife is put to death instead, and the accused wife is free to marry again and not commit adultery.


I'm pretty sure the Rabi or Rabis were notified when someone's daughter broke her hymen and that data gathering was for the protection of the women from potential accusations by a future husband.
