I've always had pretty oily hair, even when I wasn't locking up... and I was just curious if you guys knew anything to decrease the amount of oil... because I really hate the feel of oily hair, but I dont want to shower EVERYDAY either... because frankly I dont have time for that! :p I looked around the Q & A and couldn't find anything--but truthfully, I'm really stoned and didn't look too hard. Thanks for the help, dready phamily!!

thinner dreads dry up quicker so the thinner the dreads the better i had so bad oily dreads when they were thick now they're thin and no oil :)

look for the thread on the deep cleaning concoction. (If I find it, I'll bump it up for you). There's another thread in the Arts & Crafts, Body Care subforum about non-commercial ways of cleaning your hair, too.

What you need to do is stop using commercial shampoos that strip the hair of oil. That actually causes your scalp to produce more oil. But you can't just stop bathing...eeewwww! It will take a few weeks for your head to adjust to a new cleaning routine, so keep that in mind. You still have to take a shower and get your hair wet. But you can probably get away with just scrubbing your scalp with water or maybe add a drop of lemon juice to it most days, once you have adjusted to not using shampoo anymore. I went from having to wash my hair twice a day if I never wanted to look greasy, to scrubbing with baking soda twice a week. Most people who use baking soda to wash their hair only have to use it once every two weeks. But you still have to take showers!! :)

Well, sweet! Right now, I'm just using this really shitty shampoo which, now that I think about it, IS probably stripping my hair of my natural oils, making my head make even MORE oil... makes sense! I guess I'll just get my hair wet from now on in the shower... and possibly use a bit of baking soda. I'll see how it works out...:p

I used to have super oily and thin hair, and used chemical filled shampoos (herbal essense, suave, etc) practically every day.
Now I just use Dr. bronner's a couple times a week to wash my hair. It used to get super oily by the end of the day, but now it takes like 3-4 days before it gets oily. There was a transition period of a couple weeks where my hair had to get used to the new soap, and not being washed as often. It was pretty gross then, but so worth it.

As crazy as it sounds, to get all the oil out of my hair so that it started it's journey toward dreadhood, I used dishwashing soap. It worked wonders.. truly, it did. Then I drenched it in salt-water.

It hasn't been a very long journey for me yet but at least my hair is no longer gross and oily.

And drenching in salt water? Did you then rinse it out? Or just leave it?
