The running joke though the years is that Homer hates Ned but why? Ned is very kind to Homer even when Homer "borrows" his things only to really steal them Flanders is nice. When Homer makes rude comments about church Flanders is nice. In fact he is nice to the whole town. And when he finally looses his temper one time after the town builds him a shitty house he checks himself into a mental institution. He is concerned by the rage he removes himself from society. You wish you had a neighbor like Ned. Sure he's a bit odd and heavy on the whole Jesus thing but he is never going to the kind of guy slinging dope or having loud parties at 3 AM.

I recall there was an episode where Flanders goes away and Homer had a good riddance attitude about it. But then he had remorse and wanted him back.

God I can't remember which one it was. Simpsons are almost up to season 30 for cryin' out loud.

There's just some people you don't get along with in life and you know that at first site. Yeah erryone says they don't judge people blah blah but you do, it's something we do subconsciously and Ned is that person Homer just doesn't like, plus he's a submissive wuss in which homer uses to his advantage with constant bullying.

But to be fair, nobody really likes Ned. He's a pain in the ass, not ever Reverend Lovejoy tolerates him. You see this through various episodes, the constant phone calls at night etc.

I personally don't mind Ned, but I do find him irritating with his religious mumbo jumbo, so I take Homer's side all the time.

There's a few episodes where Ned actually man's up, but he's back to wuss next episode. :p

i liked the guy from india who ran the seven elven better.

but homer, sure, he's just a not very smart jerk, who has a job, got only knows how he got it, that only smart people should, or are even likely, ever to have.

if anything is the running joke, its homer being homer, and at the same time, working in the nuclear industry.
as for his family, the only one who's worth anything is his daughter, because she's the only one who ever really thinks about anything.

ned flanders is meh. he does try to be a nice guy, in spite of the religion he's always trying to prostitute.

Their differences annoy eachother. Homer gives into that, Flanders tries not to.

When I say I rather have Ned as a neighbour than Homer, that's not because I like Ned so much. Homer is basically too stupid to live. You're not sure how long his (and your) house will have all its walls.

It always sort of annoyed me that Ned was so nice to Homer despite how awful Homer was to him

Grow a backbone, Ned. Be more like other Christians and judge thy heathen neighbor!

that's the problem. homer has no one to buy drugs from or party with, so he's cranky.

was there a specific event? how do you know this date?

considering other things matt groening created; life in hell, and jeff and akbar, this was probably actually intentional.
ned not actaully openly gay, but kind of secretly closet wannabe.

then again, anyone who tries to be decent is always accused of this,
    by closet fascists.

homer's homophobia, hell that might even be why he was given the name of homer, is basically just another aspect of his clopsoid ignorance.

All this makes me laugh at the emotions expressed by sane people over the actions of a couple of animated characters. However, soap operas inspire even stronger reactions to the extent that one actor who played the 'bad guy' needed 24 hour police protection when he left the film studio. It was so serious, that the television company had to show a documentary where he was sitting drinking tea and joking with the actress who he had tried to kill in the previous weeks episode.
I would love to hear peoples reaction to the animated film "when the wind blows". At it's London premier, half the audience left the theater with tears running down their faces. It was however a very moving and thought provoking film.

The show has been on so long Homer has changed with the acceptance of gay people. In the 90's they had an episode where the joke was Homer thought Bart would be gay from hanging around with a gay man. Homer likes him when he first meets him then then when he finds out he's gay he does not. In the newer seasons he becomes a priest to make money off gay weddings. The law changes and Rev. Lovejoy will not do them. But the older episodes definitely take a different tone to being gay.

I don't think Homer actually hates Ned, Homer is envious of him. Homer is always on the brink of catastrophe in trying to balance his Family, work, social life and ventures, while Ned appears to have his life all in order without much of the same chaos. At times throughout the show, I think Homer has schemed against Ned at times to see if he would break that demeanor.

well i haven't watched anything on television for ages, so i have no idea what's going on with anything in the last ten years or longer.

as for ned having his life more easily in order, well i think that's just camouflage,
and unlike homer's family, we just don't get to see behind the curtain of it, or hadn't that last i was aware of, again a decade ago.

Well, Ned was actually really bratty kid who had no respect for anybody, especially his parents. He suppressed his anger and pretends to be a good guy, his whole life is really a cover up so he doesn't act out. His parents were free loving hippies who gave him too much freedom and no discipline. He even says as an adult, that he "I love everything, except my damn parents. Beatniks." at a mental institute.
