ok i'm a "omni" (normal ppl) however u call it but i want to know what u'd do if you were homeless. Theres a fucking truckload of homeless ppl. They have to eat whatever is there in order to stay alive. I mean, you won't beg 2bux to get a veggie food bar or a veggie burger. I'm not in this situation now, but i have been, though i'm not veggie this question popped in mah mind. So what do you think? Would you just say "fuck i need to stay alive" or "i'm going to die for the poor animals"?
Well, homeless people don't tend to have the resources to aquire information of how eating meat is bad for the environment, animals, or your health, but I would probably eat meat if I had to (however, did you notice that meat costs like 10 times as much as fruit, veggies, and grains?). Fortunately, I know all this. So I'm veggie
ok, I'm a "vegan" (normal ppl) and I suppose if I was dying of starvation I'd eat dog shit to stay alive. Thankfully, I have a wide network of supportive friends and family, so I doubt it will ever come to that for me, no matter how poor I got.
Good point Yup I'd still try and be veggie; there are plenty of veg*an food choices around. Might take some looking though. Of course I would try not to end up homeless in the first place.
When you're that poor, you're kind of forced into vegetarianism. We live in a developed country where even the poorest people here are living like kings in other countries. Real poor people don't eat meat. Even as back as 50 years ago, not alot of people bought meat like we do now; it just costs too much.
The availability of pre-prepared foods and such is much greater then fruits, grains, and veggies in homeless food places, so it'd be hard. I think I could make it though
if you're homeless, it's all about how resourcefull you are. I know a bunch of kids who live on the road and are vegitarian, one kid I know takes a bit of money and goes to the health food store wherever he is and sprouts beans in a water bottle, it only takes a few dollars and you've got fresh healthy protien rich veggies. You can dumpster dive and find plenty of good veggie food. Alot of people after a while eat what they can find, and just don't buy meat, but if it's free it's all good. You can be veg and be on the road/homeless, it's not easy, but no aspect of living like that is easy.
Theres one thing that also bad about the homeless food places. I think the homeless shelter people might be pissed it your like, "can't eat that, I'm vegan."
People in desparate situations may have little choice about how they eat, what they wear, and how they live. Human beings can do many things they would not normally do when survival is at stake--like eat food that has been thrown away or build their own makeshift shelters out of debris. I think it's fair to say most people would resort to doing things they normally would never dream of if survival was truly in question. People have even eaten other human beings or amputated their own limbs in extreme situations. But this certainly does not mean that those people who do have a choice should not try to be as considerate of the rest of the world as possible in thier consumer habits. Many do not lead a comfortable, sheltered life, and this should remind us of our obligation to take others into consideration as we live our lives.
i mean morally. Unless you're very special, if you end up in the streets for some reason, food you get from back-restaurant, ppl giving away what they don't eat. And i ask this only philosophicle, i dont plan to be veggie homeless anyway . Since the food you salvage is going to be wasted anyway, isn't it right to fill your stomach with it ? And i swear vegetables aren't cheaper, preprocessed from imported from who-knows country with reconstitued animal protein is the cheapest. Don't ask me why (maybe 'cos they turn mineral directly to food lol ). and to Kiz, vegans aren't normal, i know i'm not normal but i deal with it, if what you want is to be normal then veganism sure is weird. Omnis are normal though, nature and nurture will make people love a juicy steak yummy!!! (im being provocative, no offense)
When I was living in London years back, there was this homeless guy who I stopped to chat to and asked if he wanted anything to eat, naturally he was happy with anything so I bought him this big cheese & salad roll incase he was veggie. It never occurred to me that he didn't have a choice, more that he just might not like meat. Never thought about that until now. Of course the other thing, if you're gonna go routing through rubbish for thrown out food, non-meat items are less likely to make you ill! Not something I'll ever have to go through hopefully.
The few times I have dumpster dived with some folks we never went "In" the dumpsters, we just knew people who left stuff "beside". If I was starving I might actually go in, but I would try to see if there were other options first. Yes, meat is more expensive. I am po right now, so all I can afford to eat is veggi soup and bread. It's darn good veggie soup though Some people do hunt in the winter though.
Antimatter you're going to gain unpopularity pretty quickly if you go around a vegetarian forum saying "it's normal, nature offers you a big juicy steak" That said If I was homeless I would still not eat meat, because I believe it puts a lot of negative energy into your soul and your body, I don't see how I'm any greater than a cow or a pig, so why should I get to eat them when they're starving as well?
If I didn't know where my next meal was coming, I would eat whatever had to in order to stay alive. I have survival instincts too, you know.

I find this impossible to believe, a starving person would eat anything they could. If I offered a starving person a chicken sandwich and they refused to eat it because it was meat, my sympathy would end right there!
I know i'll be in trouble for postin this one but I have been there before, I pesonally dont think it is wrong to eat meat and if you decided to live in a colder climate like northeast us, with no resources living off the land it would be absolute that you would need to use animals for food, clothes, sheleter etc. I think the problem with eating meat is the way we do it and not so much the fact that we do. Native americans would look into the souleyes of the animal and it would give there life to them read this somewhere but don't remeber. I do feel however that one should not eat meat with the intent of going just to eat meat. Be happy with what you have be thankful that your eating pray over your food. My motto is enjoy it while it is here and dont mourn it when it's gone. Don't hate on me please.
tis true, meat does cost more! i don't have much money and my family eats a lot of rice, potatoes, green beans, corn, grilled cheese!! they are pretty filling and inexpensive! the meat eaters in the phamily eat mostly chicken cuz it is less expensive than beef...
Sheesh! I'm a traveller, which I guess would mke me homeless. I always have money though. Not that that matters. The free places I've eaten at have veggie options....except in the prairies. I am a vegetarian. I work hard at treeplanting for three or four months of the year and then just spend my money very slowly on the road. I know kids that say theyre freegan which means they eat veggie unless its free. Not me. I wouldn't eat meat unless I absolutely had to. Which I wouldn't.
