Almost free anyway. Near muscle shoals alabama. Actually been homeless for about a month and a half, but just ventured off the couch in which I been crashing....

In your opinion wheres the best city to be a streetkid? In terms of lack of discrimination, freedom, shit to do, places to hang out, other young transiets etc?

I think you probably want to stay out of the cities.

You might want to check out the rainbow family gatherings.

If you don't have an "obamaphone" now, you may want to get one.

I can imagine the feeling of freedom might wear off soon. Would be interesting to know how soon or not at all. Keep us updated if you like! :)

A guy I'm with right now chose homeless (while "well off") at age 50 in Australia. Lived in his van and surfed. It was a very happy time for him. I think it's insane and would never do it. Shelter and soft bed are two of my favorite things.

I'm not sure to what extent the OP chose to be homeless... or if he still has any funds. But that guy of 50 probably has some funds backed up? Just wondering, since it seems to be a choice not a neccesity?

a lawyer you are fucking taking time off to pretend homelessness is a far fucking cry from being destitute and without choice

The OP sounds like he is choosing it.

Yep, plenty of funds, more than he needs, but probably sits in the back of his mind as sense of security. I don't know....I'm still trying to even comprehend why he would do such a thing, except he is an unconventional brainiac that thrives on surfing.

Man this summer I was working in Alberta and there were a couple weeks where there was no work. I had a couple hundred bucks but my company didn't give me an advance, so I just hitchhiked around with a buddy, bought maps at a gas station and camped at random lakes. I ate peanuts, oatmeal, hot dogs, beer and mostly fresh caught fish. It was a fucking awesome time. I know it's not the best fishing season at this time of year, but I'd recommend staying out of cities and hitchiking between small towns. If you've got a little bit of brains and a little bit of money, you're not homeless. You're "travelling".

I didn't exactly "choose" homelessness this summer, but I wasnt totally destitute and I knew I had work coming within a couple weeks. I think that homelessness is fucking great, so long as there's an end in sight, at least a little bit of cash and it's summertime. Homelessness in the winter is fucked. I live in Montreal and the homeless either die or smoke crack in abandoned buildings.

Sounds like we found it :p It sounds awesome to me by the way but yeah, not without funds/it being a real choice.

Has anyone else here read Walden by Thoreau? Sounds like a good life to me. Thoreau actually had a kind of hobbit type home though, not completely/exactly homeless.

Well it started off as being kicked out and subsequently being offered a couch to crash on....well got tired of the bs and only crash, there on occasion....no money, that kinda shit, so im kinda drifting....i guess its all on perspective....got a part time job (10 hrs a week) in a small town, with a larger per capita homeless population than most other small towns.

Its mostly 75% bad circumstances 25% not giving a damn.
I have a staging area of all my shit, but for the most part either couch surfing or sleeping in apartment building lobbies, shit like that.

within a couple weeks ill be moving(?) To a larger city and will set up stash spots (caches) to store clothes and supplies so if im on the north side I dont have to walk to the south side to get my gear, etc.

Ill make friends at gas stations etc, for the sake of friendship, free coffee, etc.

But, ill be looking for work too.....

    More input please

I saw this hobo like a week ago when I was walking by. I noticed an unattended bag on top of a pay phone about a quarter of the way down the block from him. I stood next to it for a second and let ppl pass by for a second then looked inside cuz I was curious. Turned out to be canned goods. I started to take it to the hobo and he said I could have it and that someone gave it to him but he couldn't use it. I left it where I found it and went on with things. I could have used the stuff myself but would have felt bad about taking it. I probably should have went and bought him a can opener but didn't think about it or really have time to. A can of sterno would have probably been nice to go with it too.

I've been homeless and free by choice for a long time. Now I own a house and a car and I can assure you that happiness does certainly not come from those kind of things.

Is being homeless really being any more free?

You still have the concerns about where to sleep, how to eat, stay warm, safety and protecting your belongings.

Does not sound free to me.
