Christian Editorial: Why Do Hippies Still Exist in America?

"From televised street protests to suburban shopping malls, it’s a shocking sight to see groups of ragged, longhaired hippies still prowling the American landscape. Once thought of as a temporary youth trend, these anti-societal, marijuana-loving civil liberation types have proven surprisingly resilient. Their hatred of Christian-American patriotism continues to be one of their most recognizable traits. As a new generation is indoctrinated into this lifestyle, the risk they pose to this nation’s foundation of morality is once again reaching a critical level."

I personally believe this to be a dirty lie. ;)

Edit: You have to admit that reading that article is rather humorous. Wow, those hippies are everywhere. :)

There have always been bohemian types in any society, but it seems to me that no group ever did it better than the hippies. So as long as there's going to be a counter-culture, why not stick with the hippies? Can you think of a better alternative?

This guy is completely out of his fucking mind but there are some points I would like to comment on:

Their hatred of Christian-American patriotism continues to be one of their most recognizable traits.

I've seen plenty of Bible thumping Hippies on this bulletin board. I've even had a couple in my family. Hippiedom isn't necessarily anti-Christian.

These are people who have managed to deny every positive cultural change of the last 50 years.
Who exactly does the author think was responsible for these changes. The people in power had more at stake to keep the social problems going than by fixing them. Divide and conquer has seemed to work to keep society going since there has been a society.

They fought against profiling and advanced interrogation techniques.
Translation: They fought against Bigotry and torture.

They have no compunction against teaching our young to rebel and to hate.
Like this guy is a warm fuzzy arbiter of lovingly living in tolerance of each other.

Hippies are predominantly white and they have used that unfairly to their political advantage.
Actually he does have a legitimate point here. If you've ever been to a Jam Band show you will realize that the only place whiter than that audience is a Klan Rally. It's weird because the scene is on of the most amazingly tolerant but you just don't see many people of color on it. But let's also face the facts that if White people didn't join the Civil Rights Movement we would still be watching Black people on the receiving end of a firehose. It is hard to get people who don't look like you to care about you. Then again a broken clock is right twice a day.

These 2 statements contradict each other:
"They know nothing of hard work." Followed by:
Some live on farms and communes, engaging in political hostility and backward agrarianism.
Having grown up on a farm and moved 300 bails of hay in 90 degree heat is hard work. Farming in and of itself is hard work. Unfortunately this moron knows nothing of it.

They will pretend to be a Buddhist Monk or a Zen Master for they love the arrogant titles, as well as the trinkets and idols crammed onto their bookshelves. The time required to study these foreign rituals, however, usually proves too trying on their limited patience.
Again I've known a few people like this. They kind of join the "Religion of the month club". Ascribing to a religious belief system until it becomes too difficult for them to maintain that lifestyle before moving on to something else. Spirituality becomes a status symbol to them and they constantly want to be on the cutting edge.

Having little access to top tier educations, hippies turn to music as an avenue for the pretense of intellectualism and culture.
I know a lot of Hippies with college educations who are either in college now or have graduated from top universities.

For fans of The Phish, life is about expressing an identity through purchasing “green” products.
Heaven forbid you mean that "Jesus" wants us to root and snort and glut ourselves like pigs until the planet is no longer inhabitable.

In conclusion, it’s clear that the hippie lifestyle is little more than cover for middle class drug abuse.
    For some.

    Peace Out,
    Rev J

    Christwire is a satire site.

With the abundance of ideological and religious groups today that are so fringe that they are essentially self-parody, it's sometimes difficult to distinguish genuine beliefs from comical parody.

I realized this was satirical when I got to this line:

"They avoid police on our roads by tucking their long hair back into their shirts and driving moderately, no matter what incredible amounts of mind-bending psychotropics they have just ingested."

thats a literal LOL right there. maybe even a literal rotflmao. I love the thought of undercover hippies! lolol

What's funny though is that I actually found a couple of lines in there that I agreed with. What the quasi scary thing is that once in a while every conservative radio talk show host I hear makes a point that I agree with. Like I said though a broken clock is right twice a day.

When I think of Jesus, I think of someone more like Jerry Garcia or Bob Marley, not a suit and a tie. The guy basically said God is love, to love one another as we love our selves, and that were all the sons and daughters of men, as well as the children of God. He told the rich to sell all their possessions and give their proceeds to the poor and that a rich man's chance of getting into heaven was as likely as a camel going through the eye of the needle (just a clever way of saying "fucking impossible man"). Believe me, if you are an egomaniac like some of these Wall Street bankers, death isn't going to be an easy process for you.

...total hippie. I mean, he didn't even hold down a real job. He just sorta drifted around from place to place, spreading his message of love and condemning the establishment. Overturning the money changer tables seems more like something Abby Hoffman would have done than Pat Robertson, who I believe Jesus would have also condemned as a dis-compassionate reptile. His followers also said he walked on water and turned water into wine, but if you eat enough mushrooms, anything's possible. Maybe it was just his mastery of mind over matter? Who knows. Focusing on him as some deity ignores the underlying truths of that enlightened man. The aristocracy took control of the church and approved the records of him that they wanted to approve and burned the ones they deemed heretical, so I don't really trust the biblical account. There's a kernel of truth, shrouded in aberration and political manipulation.
