What's really impressive about these particular glasses is that they are incredibly lightweight and require only modest computer power to operate, but their field of view is a narrow 80 degrees and, being holograms, increasing it could rapidly become impossible to do on your average computer for a few more years to come. Metamaterials and optical wave guides might be able to improve the field of view, but that's a way off in the future. Although VR and AR are still struggling to establish the basic technology as more than a novelty, within three years MS will come out with a new gaming console capable of real time ray traced geometry. That's not because Microsoft is ahead of the competition or behind them, but simply reflects when the technology will become significantly cheaper and we should see an explosion of headsets and glasses coming on the market.
