Do you stop and give hitch hikers a lift or do you drive right past making like you don't see them .The reason that i am asking is a couple a days ago i stopped for a guy hitching and he told me he had been trying for a lift for over an hour , on the busiest road in our area . I can understand that people are scared of being robbed and hi-jacked but not every hitch hiker is a serial murderer/rapist/hi-jacker , the vast majority are just regular people like you and me
I know a lot of people who use hitch hiking as their main source of transportation, but I never see any hitch hikers. So, I'm assuming they get picked up. My mom used to love to tell people about this girl she picked up, as if it were a real story but it was a joke... Went something like "I picked up this girl, she was really weird, she had this bag, asked her what was in it, said 'none of your damned business' (builds up curiousity / suspense about the bad and girl) then made the girl get out, she left the bag..." as this point the audience usually asks without fail "What was in the bag??" to which she replies "None of your damned business" and lols to herself
I used to pick up any one I saw or if they were broken down I would stop and give them a helping hand, I also used to take an eski with wisky in it were ever I went so i would have a can or two with them offer them a smoke and depending if they needed money or not I would give them some coin, The longest trip I took a hitch hiker for would have been 2,5 hours. I my self have hitched a few times also, sober and drunk every time I never walked more than a few K's. I say I yoused to because I don't any more, When I'm back on the road I'll once more offer my services for free,
If there weren't so many psychos in the world, I would happily pick hitchikers up, but sadly that is not the case. One of my brothers female friends picked up a hitchiker and he raped her, beat her, stole her car and left her to die in the ditch. Luckily she did not die... but I don't particularly want that to happen to me.
I don't see them much anymore. Back in the 70's I did a lot of thumbing and gave rides when I had a car, it was the norm. Now? I don't know, to many wack jobs out there......
I don't see them often around here. saw a girl hitching a couple days before Xmas and was going to give her a ride, but we had the back of the car stuffed with bags and presents so we couldn't. felt bad about it actually.
I only ever saw one hitcher and they were standing on an exit I wasn't taking. I would only pick up someone if I had someone else in the car or if the hitcher was a girl (less chance of rape).
It's a shame we live in such a self absorbed , selfish society where people no longer want to help others or even care about anyone other than themselves . What's even more of a shame is being justified to fear our fellow man , the "stranger" so much. And yet we have to , because our society has become so sick and crazy . Most hitch hikers are okay people who just need help . However there's always that one who could be dangerous . Back in the day you never had to worry about picking up strangers , but today it's just not the same . We have to fear EVERYTHING today , and that's just sad . What the hell happened to this society ? And what's it going to look like in ten or twenty years from now ? It remindes me of that old saying " no good deed goes unpunished ". I always hated that saying cause it valadates to people that they should never get involved or help others , and that's just not the case . Maybe people wouldn't be so crazy, desperate and alone today , if people actually took the time and cared for others the way they used to. Selfishness and ignorance breeds selfishness and ignorance . Isn't it ironic that we all fear what we all helped to create , our fellow man ? Well done Wisp , for helping a fellow traveler and human being . But don't go rolling those dice to often today . Some people you just can't help my friend . But one this one you did the right thing .
I do but rarely...and only if its a very clean looking person who wouldnt normally be hitching (like standing next to a broken down car) if they look dirty or have a cigarette in their hand ...fuck em I dont pay car insurance and fuel on three vehicles so I can give rides to smelly welfare bums
Not really hitchhiking but I did pickup this guy whose car broke-down and drove him to the service station, and then last year I picked up a female hitchhiker who was “through-hiking” the Appalachian trail and I drove her to her pickup point. hotwater
A couple times a year, I don't really see hitchhikers that often. Usually I'll make a judgment call, which I'm sure screens out nice people and insane people. I've hitchhiked for fun and necessity before too, the former a trip to New York and the latter a consequence of driving a ford escort in 2008. Probably 20 occasions, never had a bad experience. I really wish people were more trusting. Being cautious is a good thing I guess... Shouldn't let it rule your world though.
I used to hitch a lot when I was younger, and I reckon now I'm the one with the car it's my turn to return the favour, so i usually will stop to pick up a hitcher. Of course, now my cars are both two seaters, I'm not so often in a position to do so, but that's another issue ...
Hmmmmm :toetap05: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-73BUDHcCCc"]Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) - Hitchhiker scene - YouTube Hotwater
And society is defiantly no more dangerous than it was 30 years ago (less dangerous actually), which I will cite statistically if anyone would like. But the media wasn't 24 hour cycles of kidnapping coverage back then, so it's probably an understandable gut reaction.
1974 (pre-cell phone era) = Massacre 2012 (Cell phone era) = 100 Texas rangers surround the house and leather face, grandpa, and the rest are toast :2thumbsup: H
I give then a wave, but keep going. Seen too many scary movies where people get kidnapped/raped/skin filleted off/forced to eat people/surgically attached to other people like a human centipede.
