Hippy Cities?

So I'm visiting Ashville, NC and I've never seen so many dreadheads in one spot- yay for hippies taking over towns!!! It made me think of other cities with above average hippy/counterculture populations.. Austin, Texas.. Portland, Oregon.. San Francisco, California etc..

So where are some other hot-spots around the world? I'm looking to travel.

hippie CITY? sounds rather like a major contradiction in terms.

of course there were cities where 'hippie' happenings took place back in the day. all those free concerts in golden gate park for example. or the sit ins on the u.c. campus accross the bay in berkly.

north san juan, nevada county, california, which isn't a city, but it is a real place. a VERY real place. which is how i would think of any sort of real hippie place or expect it to be. any place you have as many people as a city, you're not going to have a universally shaired all pervasive spirit of mellowness, which to me is the index fossil of any sort of real hippieness.

if you ever got to seaside oregon, you can not make it do any street without seeing a hippie dude, it's fucking crazy!

 

It'd be great if all the hippies had their own little city where they lived... with high walls and razor wire and everything.
