Whats happening to buisnesses that hippies start? My favorite store ever has just closed because it went bankrupt!! It was called Groovy Street, this got me thinking. IF I start a buisness, (which I always thought would resemble Groovy Street) is it destained to fail? Will I ever be successful?? I always cringed at the thought of being bound to the 9 to 5 lifestyle my parents have, coming home around 6 completly drained, not feeling like you've really done anything. In todays world you need money and the only things I could think of were either illegal or I dont want to do it or start a buisness that now I belive will fail!! I feel like Ive given up hope!

true. Your own biz is not 9-5 its 24/7.
    hippie biz that suceeded: www.dharmatrading.com
    www.gypsyrose.com
The parking Lot chose to close and move on.
www.herbsandarts.com seems to be going well. THey have two VERY dedicated employees who are ALWAYS in there. they also run a coffe house called Oh My Goddess.

Its all in the focus, biz plan and a lot of luck.

I hate to discourage you- but you need to know this if U are thinking of making it with your own business one day, For every 1 business that succeeds there are four that fail. It's a 1:5 ratio that is statistically proven- not my words but marginal projections of expansion for 2005. Alot of people have the best in mind but with; costs of advertising, competetion and unexpected expenses- things are not always as they appear to seem. As one person said to me once, you HAVE to think and work around the clock to be successful with your own business. Many people think they can and want to- but simply do not have the skills or resources to make a business truly work.(And that is not always the peoples fault because they DO NOT have the Skills or Resources!)

Now, if U really desire to be a business owner- do your research and try to acquire the skills you need. Education and HARD work- (Because, having your own business is not a vacation or the easy way out- most of the time you work harder or JUST as hard as a 9-5 er- But if that is what you want to do, I wish you the BEST!

First, you have to consider the market your aiming for. Whats the one thing hippies tend to lack? Money! And if they do have money it's likely being spent very cautiously. The hippy market is really just an all around bad idea. I mean no offense whatsoever to hippies, it's just facts. They don't spend money on frivolous things.

You gotta also think about the people that are living in your area. Are there alot of people interested in 60s music, and tye dyes??? Because if there are not, they are not going to be going to your store.
And yes, owning your own business is alot of work. My friend owns his own right now and is there almost everyday. I would suggest trying out an internet business. You don't have to pay for rent, and could be alot cheaper in the long run.

Location is also a factor.... i would love to start a little hippie store.. it would not survive anywhere in connecticut... The only viable place is mabey middletown which has www.oldglory.com.. major head shop... some big college town you might stand a chance in..

My wife and I have started our store a few years ago. We are online and are working on getting the website compleatly working again (HUB crashed).
It is a 24/7 job, but you know what.. it's worth it. I never liked the idea of being someone's slave.
We would appreciate everyone who reads this thread to come by and visit, and to book mark us and come back when we are in working order. www.paisleydays.com
