Swami Vivekananda was one of only a handful of people recognized as a living saint by Mahatma Gandhi.

He came to the West around 1900.

Was well regarded by a wide circle of people, including the scientists of his day. Nikolai Tesla was a fan.

As was Romain Rolland, Christoper Isherwood, Aldous Huxley and many more.

He had a dark complexion. He was frequently mistaken for being African-American. Even though he took abuse on this basis, he refused to correct anyone who had made that mistaken. Refused luxuries and would sleep on a hard wood floor. Literally worked himself to death at age 39, giving everything he had to help others, despite enormous battles with huge health problems.

Also known to be extremely funny. He was once found reading the English humor magazine "Punch" and laughing so hard that he had tears coming down his eyes...
