They won’t wake up and see their jobs disappear, lose a kid to heroin, feel like they’re in a dead-end. Those are people we have to understand and empathize with as well." The wealthiest 10% now hold about 93% of all stocks; the richest 1% owns 54%. The lower half of Americans own only 1%. It's hard for 90% of Americans to feel included in your vision of America when you're crowing about record stock market highs but they only hold 7% of stock, their adult kids face a lifetime of indentured servitude to the banks holding their student loans and are sleeping on their couches because housing's no longer affordable and wages have been so flat for 40 years that most entry-level jobs barely cover the cost of gas to get to work and back and if anyone gets sick there's a 66.5% chance you'll be bankrupted by medical bills from some of the most profitable corporations in the world. The people who form the contents of this "other basket" aren't deplorable; their fears are very real, perfectly legitimate, easily converted into existential rage by Fascist demagogues, and completely ignored by centrist corporate Democrats.
