I need a referral or something :S Ive been vegetarian for about a year, and as some of you know ive recently decided to start progressing towards veganism. One of the only proboblems I am having is knowing what to avoid. From reading threads and information on the nets ive heard of things to avoid such as rennin (sp)? casein? i think... and who knows what else. Im not really a bio guy and despite me looking everywhere on the net for help, I cannot find a list or description of these so called vegan no-no's. any help would be appreciated *also... What's the deal with pastas? Some sites say that spaghetti and macaroni are good vegan foods... but while looking on the ingredients of stuff I have at home I find (egg whites) i think.. who knows:S love tom
hey tom, you are exactly right about egg whites in some pastas. usually the enriched white pastas have egg whites but if you get whole wheat or rice pasta it's often vegan. gotta check the labels though! a few other things that aren't vegan: gelatin vitamin D3 (vitamin D2 is vegan though...) milk fat (obviously...) whey
Anything with milk/cheese/lactose in it as well. And just about anything with lact- in the name. Lactic acid Sodium steareal lactyllate However, calcum lactate is fine, because it is never dairy-derived (or so my research says).
yup yup, rennet (I think that's what you meant?) is an enzyme taken from the stomachs of baby cows (or summat, I read this a while ago). It's the same thing with caesin (sp?). Anyway...these are things that you usually find in products that are the least suspect, like Vegetarian Baked Beans. Anyhoo, I'd recommend Linda McCartney's vegetarian/vegan cookbooks for any more info--great recipes and all the tricks of avoiding non-human-animal consumption that one could desire.
