Because having dreads is like having sunshine on a rainy day. And we all love being stared at by strangers. But seriously, some of us backcomb because we have to look professional, and don't have time for the neglect method... Or we're just impatient.

I was just curious because I have i guess what you would call "neglect" dreadlocks after not doing touching my hair for a few months and i have 2 massive ones and for sheer curiousties sake i wanted to look up what affect conditioner would have if any from people who have the same kind of thing going on and found groups like this of people who like.. live dreadlocks.. suprised me quite a bit..

how long have you had your locks?

Hope you're not one of those 'neglect' dread elitists :)

I twisted/ripped my locks because I didn't want to wait years for my hair to look like dreads

oh no no nothing elitist or anything i just didnt know people got so into it if you know what i mean? not to say people are obsessed but to the point of like sharing pictures and stories and tips and what have you.. I just couldnt be assed with combs or conditioner anymore really and having massive dreadlocks is easier to tie up.. id say my hairs been 100% locks for say.. 6 months? I guess i can see how people would want them from the cosmetic side of things just for me it was pure convenience and im just kind of amazed by how much love/work people put into it.

I think there are all kinds of dread people on this forum- those who crochet, maintain, neglect, backcomb, twist their locks. Those who use special shampoo and those who just use any old soap, and those who just rinse with water. Those who have used wax and bands and those who haven't. It makes it more interesting.

Well, if you have very curly hair like you obviously do then it makes dreading extremely easy, somewhat effortless...

If you keep them you'll have awesome dreads in no time:cheers2:

    Welcome to the forum. :)

Do you mean just have one big dread at the back? I think the conditioner of choice for many people on the forum is aloe vera. I'm sure you'll hear from others wiht different opinions though. ;)

Now that you found us, have you looked around at some pics and stuff? That's kinda how I think we all stumbled on this place. hehe

I don't use any conditioner. I wash them once a week and get in the ocean 2-3 times a week. Can't wait till your locks mature. they will look awesome

Are you asking what will get that mega dread out? VO5 Hot oil, and shaving it off are the only two things I've heard of that work. If it's painful you can rip it into sections if you don't want to remove it completely.

If you aren't too bothered about getting dreads I wouldn't worry about conditioner would do xD I'm not quite sure what you're asking though xD

lol don't worry my question is about impossible to answer really. I dont want to undo my hair or anything i was just wanting to know hypothetically what affect conditioner would have on it if any, just to settle a debate between me and the missus. I appretiate all your feed back though.. I'll get around to posting better pics with a flash this time when i get a camera..

for new dreadies conditioner is very bad, especially if you're neglecting your dreads, when I first started mine I washed with some shampoo that had conditioner in it on accident, and it left my hair silky smooth and unknotted, I basically had to start over. For mature dreads, I don't think it's as bad.
