I have a paranoid fear that I have had a hernia for a long time. And I know there is a method of testing for hernias where the doctors hold your testicles and you cough. But how does the test work and how can you be sure you have a hernia? Its an important question that I hope someone can answer me.

The testicles are supposed to raise upward as you cough if you DON'T have a hernia. If you DO have a hernia, the affected testicle remains stationary.

i think that in this case you should consult with a doctor. i'm not sure coughing and feeling the balls will cut the mustard. i've heard that another way to check for a hernia is for a finger to be inserted up the rear end! so watch out. go to a doctor.
