What are the necessary conditions for growing clary sage and patchouli? I live near chicago, and if it's too cold for anything i have lotsa room for grow lights and all that in the house. Are there any herbs that would grow outside in this zone? i'm a beginner, having exactly no experience with plants and all that, so any thoughts or ideas would be helpful.

patchouli is a tropical. Mine survived a while under a cloche (big glas cover) to make a sort of terrarium.
