Somethin' I'm dyin' to know... how does this end up coming anywhere close to texture like this i've been maintaining my locs for about 6 months now, i just recently realized they were supposed to be washed regularly. The only reason I haven't been is because I've tried locs twice before and I guess I washed prematurely and they ended up completely unraveling. I washed all the gunk and wax out of them with some generic dread shampoo I found in the beauty supply, but whenever I try to twist them, they never really stay put. And washing them now just turns them into this big puff of dreadfro. What should I do?
Don't twist them. Twisted hair isn't dreadlocks, those are just twists. Leave them be and they'll lock, especially with African textured hair, trust me. Never use wax again, and wash with a residue-free soap or shampoo, like Dr. Bronner's.
Doesn't matter, really. My hair isn't really kinky at all, it's more of a loose curl, but because of it being a bit curly it dreads WAAAY easier than a lot of people's. No one should have to use wax or twist their hair.
I'm under the impression that to get african textured dreadlocks you need that type of hair... you could get really thin dreadlocks but they wouldnt have the same texture and would be alot of work to keep them separate and not congo together
Yeah, but if anything I just want something uniform instead of just like bedhead 24/7 haha. i might take Pypes advice and just palmroll like I had a gun to my head
make sure you wash regularly! if dr. bronners doesn't work for you, try baking soda or one of the "recipes" around the forums regular washing will seem to make them come undone at first, but they have to relax before they can lock up tightly...
Now there's something I needed to hear! So this bedhead dreadfro thing is just a phase? How often, really, should I wash? I've been doing it every day since
The point a lot of people miss, is that if you have thick, kinky hair, there honestly is less you need to do and there are things WE can do that a person with thin hair cannot do. If you're hair isn't as thick, then it might take more of a effort to make it look like home dudes. Honestly, best advice would probably be to ask someone who has similar hair. That's aside. My hair isn't backcombed and it's twisted, at least for the first 6-9 months. It looked like super curly jericurl, no lie. I would just twirl my hair whenever I thought about it. Question. How often do you normally wash your hair? Before I had dreads, I wash infrequently, due to hair type. When you do wash, try air drying and twisting at the same time.
Here's all the garbage I've been putting in it. I wanted to just get the kit from Dreadhead HQ as I've heard people have had great luck with that site, but I don't have a credit card to order it all. So I'm left having to scrounge around for other means to wrap the naps :|
Most of us here aren't big on maintenance or "hair product"... the bulk of our advise will consist of, "don't worry about it, just wait." If your goal is truly to have locks like the pictures in your first post, we're not gonna be of much help to you.
I wash it just about everyday. Honestly, I'm thinking of just going to a "Locktition" or whatnot at a salon and letting them take care of it, it's a real headache trying to find something that works @.@
Locktitions are bullshit scammers. They don't make dreads. They make greasy, disgusting twists and "sista locks". Not real dreadlocks. It sounds like you don't want real locks, you just want shitty hair sticks.
