Hey guys Tried to dread my hair using the backcomb and twist technique last night and it didn't turn out so well. Not anyones fault really but it was rushed and the dreads are too thick and well my hair looks like ab it of a disaster. I have ordered some dread removal cream but because its the weekend it won't be here for a few days. Is there anything I can do to help this along? for example should I remove the wax? P.S I know that I will probably have to cut my hair but if I can save about half of my hair I will be a little happier about the prospect Thanks a bunch
OK! Calm the funk down You dont need to cut your hair, you should't have put wax in, so either way(keep em' or not) you will probably want to remove and then re-backcomb. Wax is so bad for your hair, you dont need any of this shit from Dreadhead HQ or Knottyboy, its all a con full of chemicals. 9 months down the line I'm still removing wax from my hair *MAD* Soak your hair in conditioner, for a few hours then comb them out, your hair will be fine to comb out, although its gonna hurt. Your dreads probably look fine, except for the wax! They aren't an instant hairstyle, backcombing gives the instant feeling of dreads but they get really loose and look worse than when you backcombed them for a while! Don't buy any products from them, tell your friends not to aswell In the future dont buy into these companies, you can ask anyone on here, none of the products help. Make sure you use plenty of conditioner, I would leave it a while before trying backcombing again. Alex
I'm thinking about washing the wax out and leaving it in its current sate, it will look messy as hell but it may look good, any opinion on that?
Hmm up to you but I'd wash the wax out.. if it isn't backcombed too tight, washing will probably make the knots which you made disappear.
Just take a couple really hot showers and don't rub your head, wrap it up in a towel. the wax will eventually come out just don't put anymore product in you hair. Start with ripping apart one fat dread at a time, don't feel like you have to have instantaneous dreadlocks. It doesn't happen like that. It's a process, enjoy the ride. As long as your head is all knotty and nappy sounds like your in a good starting place.
remove the wax immediately or your going to have to boil the wax out of your head i suggest starting over (not from a hair cut) untangle the backcombing you did with conditioner and start wax free
get the wax out of your hair. read the icky sticky wax removal thread. actually, read all of our stickied threads, you will get a whole new outlook on locks. locks take forever to happen. locks normally don't mature untill 6 months to 2 years, so you will need the patience to take the wax out of your hair to have the patience to wait for locks to happen. locks look wacky when they are young. backcombed locks look even wackier because the change is so drastic. just wait and your hair will form locks, learn patience. get some pictures on here so we can see what you are talking about.
defo get the wax out.. i also suggest combing out, washing alot to get the last bits out and then re-backcombing (if you want too) some people would say do the natural route.. no backcomb, just leave it to tangle by itself etc but you must get the wax out,, and defo read the sticky threads =]
post pictures of what ur hair looks like. because when i back combed mine. they were really big and poofy. and its been like 4 months and they are lil ropes now. so just give it time, unless u really did do something wrong.
I did my best to wash out the wax this morning, I can still feel some in the dreads but I got alot of it out, I will try some of the tips in the wax removal threads next time I go shopping, just waiting for the dreads to dry at the mo.
well lets see... upi say they were rushed... theres no rushing dreads.. thats problem 1 then theres the wax.. biggest mistake you can make..thats problem 2.. then theres caring about how messy they look the next day..again problem 3 dreads will look messy for monthns till they form and tighten rushing them only adds to the problem and breeds more disatisfaction ..yopu look at your 1 day "dreads" and compare them to more mature dreads and dont feel satisfied with the results because you put so much work into them going natural you allow the mess to evolve slowly over time so you give up caring hoew they look through the early stages and trust in the process to make it work out in the end but even if yuou backcomb its very helpful to not expect imediate "dreads" and instead expect a mess for awhile the sites that sold you on wax did you more dammage then to just your hair, they also dammaged your trust in the process they made you expect instant nice drewads which as you see isnt what ya end up with and even if you had ended up with noice neat dread like things they'd be just waxy messes that wouldnt last ya too long so heres my advice 1 1/2 a bottle of condirioner soaked for an hour or so..comb out gently as u can starting at the ends working slowly up (only try to comb the last knotted 1/4 inch or so moving up a 1/4 inchat a time till u get to the roots them move on to next dread 2 reapply conditioner as needed you may go through 2-3 bottles even 3 once you've gotten all the dreads undone and the wax out (even after the combing out id take extra steps to be sure theyre wax free) start using a non residue shampoo maybe start with nutregena daily clarifying to get all the built up wax and conditioners out for a week then swutch to dr b or whatever u klike (deep cleanse maybe) give your hair at least 2 weeks to recover before deciding wether ya wanna go natural or backcomb (dont comb during those 2 weeks or use anyt more conditioners, maybe do a sea salt spray every couple days to help too) at this pioint upi can banckcomb if your really impatient, or go on using the non residue soapo and not combing/conditioning a few more weeks before you decide chances are by 5 weeks you'll start seing progress and not need to backcomb if you did backcomb after 2 or 5 weeks then only do it once and leave em be after that..dont expect them to look perfect for a long time (or ever, theres noi such thing as perfect looking dreads) wether u backcomb or go natural expect it to take a good 6 months before you really start to geel satisfied with the results dreads take time so dont ecpect them to be wonderfil the next day they wont really be dreads for awhile anyway
My "problem" wasn't that the dreads were messy is that they were dreaded to thick which just doesn't look good, the dreads have been serperated now and I'm trying to get the wax out before deciding my next move. Thanks for the advice
those thick spots could get thinner over time if you have thinner hair. just something to remember now that you've got the ball rolling.
yeah, dreads tighten over time and you can always seperate them if they get too thick for your liking. just relax and let your hair do what it wants good dreads have happy mellow owners I think
It's all good, I think I've been very chilled about the situation, but I have been having trouble getting the wax out (I used that mix from the sticky thread) alot of it came out, I can tell by how much wax is at the bottom of my bath. I'm going to get more baking soda tomorrow
Dude, it's cool, one waxing won't kill you, I used it for 7 weeks!!!! Sometimes 3x a day and I still managed to remove it all after a lot of heartache and headache. But don't touch it again! This thread is useless without pics
Been using the tips from the wax removal thread and been pretty much washing my hair with that mixture since sunday, its slowly starting to come out and some of the dreads are naturally starting to seperate. Still a few thick ones at the back.
