Can some body please tell me the difference between OXYcontin--- HYDRO morphine. My Dr. switched me from 60 mgs 3times a day to 24 mgs 3 times a day? :sultan:
That is a good question. Because everyone feels differently about both of those substances for pain management. Im assuming you were taking the oxy and know what that is like and how good it was at relieving your pain. Now for hydromorphine AKA dilaudid, i can only speak from experience. I could snort about 24 mg's of dilly's and catch a slight buzz when i had an oxy tolerance of about 80 mg daily. And 80 mg of oxy at that point would get me mentally and physically pain free. I never understood what people enjoyed so much about hydromorphine...it does not last long at all and i never thought it was that strong. But some people love it, especiall IV users but thats mostly because they enjoy the intense rush, not for all day pain relief. It would help to know how long you have been on the oxy and why your dr. switched you off of them. Welcome to the opiate section of hip forums! Their are several pain patients that could further assist you more than i can. Most of them really know their meds and i have a feeling a couple of them will mention that you might want to try and pursue OXYmorphone(Opana) as another alternative.
While I dont have a big history with Hydromorphone or Dilaudid, Most conversion tables will put the two doses you mentioned above at about equal. The conversion table I used said that 24MGs of Dilaudid was equal to 64MGs of Oxycodone and since what you are using, both being extended relaease, works out to be about the same, so you not gonna gain much in the area of pain relief. AS 1moreday Mentioned, I would think Oxymorphone (Opana) to be a better fit, say Opana ER 40MG tablets. At that level, the Opana ER 40MG is equivalent to 80MGs of Oxycodone which your Oxycontin is just the ER version. So unless hes willing to up the dose of Dilaudid hes gonna give you, I dont think you will notice a difference, unless of course , outside of IV, you intend to use a Route of Administration (ROA) which could raise the Bioavailability (BA) of the Dilaudid. The only ROA ive read about that makes the DIllies work is IV. Opiate niave people can find some goodness out of snorting them, but then you are not opiate naive....
Please look at my sticky thread "Pharmacology of Opioids" at the very top of the sub-forum's page. It goes into great detail about those substances.
I'm very Opioid tolerant, but, shit, snorting 8mg Hydromorphone knocks me out! I'm also on 40mg Opana ER which I snort as well. But even a 40mg Opana doesn't hit me as hard as the Dilaudid. But anyway, yeah, OP, they're very different substances and unless you snort or shoot the dilaudid it will practically be a waste. Now iit is time foor me to blow half of an 8mg dilly.
at 1 point in time my pain doctor switched my roxicodone to diuladid.i was taking 50 8mg dialudid a day.1500 a month and they sucked,i tried taken them orally with no success.i tried sniffing them and still nothing. oh and i didnt make a mistake on my dosage
When talking about getting high Hydromorphone is way above Oxycontin. But only if you inject it. I find if I snort/swallow I do not feel it. When I inject I get a godly rush (I like it better then heroin's) and then a nice 2 hour mild high. I find heroin's rush is slightly weaker but I prefer it due to the better after-high
