    hey, i was just wondering...
you know those shows where they force a person to lose like 60 pounds in 60 days or some shit like that...
well that can't be healthy for you.
does anybody know about how many pounds a week your body should be able to drop in a healthy way with the aid of exercise?
im guessing maybe 1-3 but does that seem slow...?

Are you asking how much you could, or should lose?
Most people advise 1-2 pounds per week.
But it isn't uncommon for someone to lose 10 pounds in the first week or two, but that is 'water weight' and very easily gained back.

It depends on how much weight (fat) you have to lose. But 1-2lbs is a pretty good deal for people on a small deficit diet. You can also be more aggressive with your approach, but unless you have that type of discipline, a more flexible approach would be your best bet.

1-2lbs is not slow at all, especially when you consider that you should be trying to save your lean body mass.

    The other responses are good...

You're 16... I'd strongly recommend cleaning up your diet-- not necessarily cutting calories, and get to a gym regularly... and lift. It's not necessary to go too heavy- stay focused on what YOU want to accomplish and not be distracted by trying to impress other people (it happens all the time!) and you'll be fine.

my diets actually pretty good. i get my veggies and my protein and other good stuff. the only junk food i really eat are things like pizza, fish and chips. and even then maybe once a month

You're on a good path then. I recommend lifting in part because you're at the age where testosterone is about as high (naturally) as it's ever going to be- and lifting can exploit that for muscle development which in turn helps to increase your metabolism, even when you're at rest or sleeping.

just because you think it may be healthy doesn't necessarily mean it is... and there is more to proper diet than veggies and protein.. there is also getting enough good cholesterol and cutting back bad cholesterol.. keeping calories in a decent range.. you are a male.. so somewhere between 1800-2200 calories a day is good... proper fiber intake also.. 30+ grams of fiber per day.. gallon of water a day.. these are just a few good rules of thumb..

also i think healthy weight loss depends on the individual person.. but like most said 2lbs a week is healthy.. during the summer i lost 50lbs.. and then i gained a bit back.. then over the past week i have lost about 5lbs again.. which feels great!

I once got put on a crash diet (stupid campus doctor decided that I needed to lose weight fast, get back on that damned weight chart... she told me I was diabetic, too, and I'm not...) and lost 8 pounds in 7 days. It made me so sick, by the end I couldn't have eaten if I had wanted to. I had to work my way back to eating anything. Don't try to lose weight too quickly, it puts your body through the ringer.

1lb of fat is approximately 3500 calories. So to drop 2lbs of true fat weight per week, you'd have to take in about 7000 calories below your maintenance level per week or 1000 below per day. That's quite a cut.

... ive already lost lots of weight since this post, and i think ive done just that, i made some choices like eating vegetables and fruits only when i want a snack, instead of pre packaged things, i drink lots more water.. i found out i wasnt drinking enough, also i have a exercise plan and free access to the local recreation center, i also quit stcking to tight meal scheduals, i eat when im hungry and drink when im thirsty and not till im full, so i eat maybe 6 times a day nut small portions, like... a piece of toast and an orange fo breakfest, or like, some cheese cubes for a snack, just things like that. also, i get good exercise from the 1/2 hour brisk walk to school and the same one coming home, right now i am 5 '4' and 145 lbs, before i was 5'3.5' and 160 lbs. i know my weights not perfect, i would either like to have more muscle or lose 15 more lbs but im still losing weight so i will just keep on with this until i can find a healthy level of diet and exercise that i can apply in everyday life. right now i have no trouble with my routine so i will just keep making small healthy adaptations.

Actually, he did. If you exercise more, though, you would need more maintenance calories, so you'd get to eat more.

I always hear that you shouldn't opt to lose more than 2 pounds a week. Although if you're very overweight and you're just starting working out, you're going to lose a lot faster than that at first, but don't get used to it.

When I started I was losing 5-7 pounds a week and it slowly went down to a pound or less. Eventually when it stops you have to work harder to keep losing. You've done great so far, so be proud of yourself!
