I am wondering about the health hazards of being under high powered lights for many hours per day. Because I know it certainly cant be very good. Are there any suggestions on precautions I could take? Just something I would like to know more about. Thanks
would of thought not looking directly at burning bulbs is a good idea. think you would need to be really close like in a grow room all day to get any harm unless your sensitive to light in both cases good uv sunglasses and cover up or sun block.
Yeah I was pretty aware not to look at the lights haha. And okay yeah I was just wondering about cancer and other diseases caused by similar means. Thanks for the reply!
you could mediate and maybe listen to schumann resonances as i think the biggest health risk would be from the negative vibrations/frequencies from the electricity being used. just cleanse yourself everyday =]
You should be wearing welding glasses in there, if your running HPS/MH. I switched to LED's and thought I would not need them anymore....WRONG!! If your getting mulitpul bands, then you adding IR and UV, and thats harmful.GREAT for the plants...not your eyes.
Thank's for the information. Yes I should start wearing some eye protection for sure. At least do what I can.
pretty much a twitch in my eye is from HPS lighting. the symptom are like welders flash http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photokeratitis
Great thread topic, I always wondered how my eyes were going to end up after being around that lighting. HPS bulbs MH also screw with my video camera, I hate that banding.
Hey HipChris, I believe that distortion is from the magnetic ballast when running. All I know I went from a $350.00 a month eletric bill to $30.00, and still grow all I need. Viva LED's!!

There are may hazards of indoor lightning but if you use LED Lights in indoor that will protect you from hazards.
Yes, It depends on light spectrum to see if led grow lights is harmful or not. Invisible IR lights (wavelength above 770nm) & UV lights?(below 380nm) would hurt humen's eye and skin, espeically UV lights. Don't stay too much time under lights with Inviisble IR & UV emitting lights. Please wear anti-UV cloth if there is a must to stay long time undering the lights
I'm myself facing a similar problem which dragged me to this problem. I tried fans and glasses too but in vain. My friend suggested me to get LED lights from Initial-led. I've heard about it too. Any suggestions ?
Try To use the Eco Friendly Led Lights that makes to solve the health problems as study is necessary.
This is my first post here, correct me if I made some mistakes. Some traditional bulbs might be unhealthy to us, even CFLs, The European Union is eliminating the traditional incandescent bulbs step by step and is forcing people to use compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) to meet its climate change targets. However, a Germany study, reported by Daily Mail, claimed that broken CFLs can release potentially harmful amounts of mercury inside, especially for babies, small children and pregnant women. The study, operated by Germany’s Federal Environment Agency, said levels of toxic vapor around smashed eco-bulbs were up to 20 times higher than the safe guideline limit for an indoor area of 0.35 micrograms per cubic meter, while traditional incandescent bulbs, LED lights and halogen bulbs would not. I find those messages on a blog here http://goo.gl/aSYDyo but LED bulbs are kinda healthy to use. Because LEDs do not contain mercury or other toxic substances, which is friendly with the environment and human health. And LEDs Generate little heat or UV rays, unlike incandescent lights that generate a large amount of waste heat.
Do you guys use High pressure sodium bulbs or LED? I want to upgrade to LED when it's less expensive, Idk if the HPS bulbs are actually bad for you in any way at all, The only risk I know of, is getting your bodily oils on the bulb, and having it heat up and go boom if you're not careful
any light source that generates true ultra-violet light has the potential to be harmful. when considering the expense of LED vs MH, ask yourself, 1) how often do you need to change the MH or LPS bulbs. 2) how big is the energy consumption difference. I'm pretty sure you will find that compared to other lighting types, LEDs will pay for themselves in savings within a year or two easily. also good quality, high wattage LEDs will still produce a good bit of heat, but still considerably less than other types. there a ton of options available across all price ranges; http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=lp_14252941_nr_p_n_feature_keywords_0?fst=as%3Aoff&rh=n%3A2972638011%2Cn%3A%213238155011%2Cn%3A14252881%2Cn%3A14252941%2Cp_n_feature_keywords_two_browse-bin%3A6012247011&bbn=14252941&ie=UTF8&qid=1437758599&rnid=6012243011 I'm using a GalaxyHydro 165 watt unit for my reef tank and so far so good. been contemplating getting a "grow box" and decking it out with LED, one unit similar to what I use for my fish and then some of the "lightbars" that can be put just about anywhere, even right against the plants.
